Mr Burnham comfortably beat Reform UK’s Robert Kenyon by more than 9,000 votes in what had been dubbed a two-horse race.

Nigel Farage’s party made serious gains in the Makerfield area in the local elections, but Mr Kenyon failed to see off the challenge from the Greater Manchester mayor on Thursday, securing 35% of the vote to Mr Burnham’s 55%.

More than 45,500 votes were cast on Thursday, which equates to a greater turnout (58.8%) than that of the previous general election (52.5%) in 2024.

Such statistics could now convince Labour MPs that Mr Burnham is the leader that Labour needs to stay in power and keep Reform out of its heartlands.

Rupert Lowe’s Restore Britain party gained around 7% of the vote for the first time in Makerfield, while Conservative candidate Michael Winstanley won just over 2% of the vote. The Tories had been ruled out as competitors for the seat long ago, with some suggesting they should not stand in the by-election at all.

Liberal Democrat candidate Jake Austin won just 163 votes.
