Rivian Automotive and Lucid Group Inc., LCID -2.14% two electric-car startups looking to emulate Tesla Inc.’s TSLA +1.04% success, are making their marketplace debuts, shipping their first models to customers and planning to expand production.

Lucid, a California-based upstart that went public in July through a merger with a special-purpose acquisition company, began building its first all-electric Air sedans in Arizona in September and started delivering them to customers Saturday.

The company, which is backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign-wealth fund, is looking to target the high-end market for luxury electric cars—a niche long dominated by Tesla—with the Air, a model that starts at $77,400. The first versions delivered over the weekend cost around $169,000.

Rivian, another up-and-comer backed by Ford Motor Co. F +0.91% and Amazon.com Inc., AMZN -1.06% has started delivering its first model, the electric R1T pickup truck, to buyers and recently revealed plans for a second U.S. assembly plant to expand production beyond its factory in Normal, Ill.

The rollout of these first models is a milestone for the two upstarts and gives them an advantage in the race among electric-vehicle startups. The next challenge will be increasing factory output to boost sales, said Peter Rawlinson, Lucid’s chief executive. Lucid said it plans to make roughly 575 cars by the end of 2021 and increase that to 20,000 next year.

“What’s next is just getting the volume ramped up and pushing like crazy,” Mr. Rawlinson said.

Both Rivian and Lucid are scaling operations as Tesla’s valuation has continued to soar, crossing the $1 trillion mark last week.

edit: Tranziciju ce platiti kupci u prvom redu i hiljade otpustenih radnika zbog pojednostavljenja procesa proizvodnje.

Exclusive: Global carmakers now target $515 billion for EVs, batteries | Reuters

Ali, staza do uspjeha nije pravolinijska:

The most recent analysis shows carmakers planning to spend an estimated $515 billion over the next five to 10 years to develop and build new battery-powered vehicles and shift away from combustion engines. But industry executives and forecasters remain concerned that consumer demand for EVs could fall well short of aggressive targets without substantial additional incentives and even greater spending on charging infrastructure and grid capacity.

Brian Maxim, head of global powertrain forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions, likens the growing investment commitments in vehicle electrification to the Cold War: "Once a few manufacturers announced EV programs, everyone else had to announce their own or be viewed as being left behind."

However, he added, "this leaves a lot of vehicle manufacturers planning significant volumes for a vehicle category that has unknown consumer acceptance, and will have minimal to no profit" for years

...aaand this just hot off the press:

EV truck manufacturer Rivian raises nearly $12 billion in massive IPO (msn.com)

The stock began trading Wednesday on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol RIVN.

Founded in 2009 by CEO RJ Scaringe, a 38-year-old MIT grad, Rivian is building an electric truck and SUV, as well as 100,000 custom EV delivery vans for Amazon, an investor in the company. Rivian has raised about $10.5 billion from investors since 2019, a roster that also includes Ford Motor Co. and T. Rowe Price.

Amazon disclosed in an SEC filing last month it owned about a 20% equity stake in Rivian as of Sept. 30.
