So if you touch a cable to the negative post its near the battery and there will be a spark upon touching the post which will ignite. I have seen a battery explode and the top fly off 20 feet in the air and the mechanic was standing over the battery when it exploded. All of the Sulfuric acid splashed onto his face. A metal surface is grounded which is connected to the negative side of a battery. Same as connecting to terminal.
