It's supposed to be the happiest holiday of your life – when you and your loved one have a wonderful time and want to share your good times with friends and family and recently thanks to social media the world at large.

At least that is what a Neapolitan woman thought when she posted photographs of her honeymoon on her Facebook page.

Following a marital row her husband demanded that the photographs be taken down because he had not given his permission and even took his wife to court to force the issue.

Ordinary people undergo road rage-like personality changes when using internet sites like Facebook and Twitter, a leading psychologist has warned.

A dangerous combination of people feeling distanced from the person they are abusing and having a vast platform on which to vent anger instantly encourages users to become more aggressive.

Just as normally calm drivers sometimes lash out when they get frustrated behind the wheel, so ordinary people can become uncharacteristically angry on social media, said Dr Richard Sherry.

The clinical director of Psychological Systems in central London said people using social media were less likely to feel empathy or compassion towards others.

Casual dating website Adult FriendFinder has been hacked, an investigation from Channel 4 News has found — and the personal details of millions of users have been leaked.

With 63 million global users, Adult FriendFinder is one of the largest dating and casual encounter networks online. (For reference, there were an estimated 50 million Tinder users in late 2014.) But 3.9 million users' accounts have allegedly been leaked online, and are circulating in spreadsheets on forums.

The details leaked include:

    Sexual preferences
    Email addresses
    Sexual orientation
    Dates of birth
    Addresses
    Usernames
Whether users are "seeking extramarital affairs"

Together, these pieces of information put together a comprehensive (and potentially highly compromising) picture of the victims' lives. It's not yet clear how the data was leaked — we've reached out to Adult FriendFinder and will update this story when they respond — but it opens the door to spam and blackmailing.

Tired of battling with teenage children about putting their mobile phones away before bed?

Take heart - for scientists say parents are right to be worried about the effects on youngsters of chatting with friends on social media before going to sleep.

A study has found teenagers who use websites such as Facebook within 30 minutes of bedtime tend to perform worse in class.

EU will not raise social media age limit to 16

16 December 2015

...

There had been a proposal to ban Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other services from processing personal data belonging to under-16s unless their parents had given consent.

That would have effectively prevented the companies from offering their services to young people.

Tech firms lobbied against the idea.

"Member states will now be free to set their own limits between 13 and 16 years," said Jan Philipp Albrecht, the European Parliament's lead MEP on the new data protection rules.
