Manuel Cardoso, a Portuguese rider on the RadioShack team, is one of the few riders who witnessed the tragic accident that claimed the life of Belgian rider Wouter Weylandt in Monday’s third stage at the Giro d’Italia.Cardoso was trailing Weylandt near the bottom of the Passo del Bocco with about 25km to go when he saw the big Belgian crash. RadioShack press attaché Philippe Maertens released this e-mail to VeloNews on what Cardoso saw: “Wouter was dropped and tried to come back to the group,” Maertens wrote of Cardoso’s reaction. “(Weylandt) then looked behind to see if he would be better to wait for other dropped riders (some 20). While looking behind, he hit with his left pedal or the left side of his handlebars on a small wall and was catapulted to the other side of the road when he hit again something. It must have been terrible.” Cardoso later finished in a group of riders at 3:20 back that also included Leopard-Trek rider Tom Stamsnijder, who also saw his teammate fall. “I saw him crash,” Stamsnijder said at the line. “It was a very hard fall.” Italian police later went to the RadioShack team hotel after the stage to question Cardoso on details of the tragic accident that put a pall over the Giro.
Giro d’Italia race director Angelo Zomegnan said “the race will go on,” after the death of Wouter Weylandt. How riders and teams will decide to act remains unknown. “Tomorrow, the riders will interpret how they want to ride,” Zomegnan said. “Whatever choice they make, we will respect it.”All related stories The Giro will take a somber tone for Tuesday’s fourth stage. “Tomorrow we plan to pay homage,” Zomegnan said. “In the afternoon we will turn off the music and keep a low profile.” Zomegnan and Giro doctor Giovanni Tredici were not forthcoming with further details of Weylandt’s death. “Before we give any further details, we would like to meet with the widow and Wouter’s father,” Zomegnan said.
David Millar (Garmin-Cervélo) has vowed to wear the Giro dItalia’s maglia rosa in honour of Wouter Weylandt, who tragically died during stage 3 of the Giro d’Italia.“I will wear the pink jersey tomorrow, but it will be in memory of Wouter, there is no celebration or glory, only sadness. I will discuss with Tyler [Farrar], Leopard and the family of Wouter what we as a peloton will do tomorrow.”Farrar was a close friend of Weylandt and the American apparently dropped his bike at the finish when he was told of the news.“Within our team we have one of Wouter's best friends, Tyler, in a way he was Ty's European brother,” continued Millar.“The next few days are going to be very difficult for us as racing cyclists, but for Tyler, and the friends and family of Wouter it is going to be a lifetime of loss.“I love cycling, and I've always been enchanted by the epic scale of it all, it was why I fell in love with it as a boy. Yet Wouter's death today goes beyond anything that our sport is supposed to be about, it is a tragedy that we as sportsmen never expect, yet we live with it daily, completely oblivious to the dangers we put ourselves in. This is a sad reminder to us, the racers, what risks we take and what lives we lead.Wouter was a sprinter, this means he was one of the most skilful bike handlers in the peloton, for this to have happened to him shows that we are all at risk every single kilometer we race.”“My wife was in tears when I spoke to her after the race because she couldn't understand why the live television was showing him receiving medical attention when in such a horrific state. All she could imagine was that it was me. I haven't told her yet, that like her, Wouter's girlfriend is five months pregnant.

Nego,
Before the stage, Contador described today's stage as 'complicated'. He knows there is a risk of losing a few precious seconds today. Or even more if some one punctures on the dirt roads or crashes.
