Marvin (Paranoid Android) Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Quote Theresa May’s government has suffered a humiliating defeat in the House of Commons after MPs backed an amendment to her flagship Brexit bill, limiting the powers it will grant to ministers. As the prime minister prepares to travel to Brussels to meet her fellow EU leaders on Thursday, the former attorney general Dominic Grieve appeared to have won the support of more than a dozen Tory rebels for “amendment seven”, promising MPs a decisive vote on the Brexit deal before Britain leaves. hazard Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 https://www.politico.eu/article/eu-to-uk-youre-not-special-brexit-talks-phase-2/ EU to UK: You’re not special The UK wants ‘deep and special’ ties post-Brexit but the EU has other ideas. Looking ahead to discussions about the future relationship with the U.K., senior EU officials and diplomats are warning that the bloc has numerous partnerships, including trade agreements, with many countries, and Brussels has no intention of diminishing those arrangements by offering London a sweeter package. That’s especially true, officials said, when it comes to Norway and Switzerland — the two big partners that pay into the EU budget to be part of its single market. U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May has stated repeatedly that Britain will leave the single market and customs union. As a result, the view in Brussels is that Britain cannot expect or get a closer, deeper or more special relationship than the EU has with Switzerland and Norway. At the same time, EU officials are also stressing that “most-favored nation” (MFN) provisions in existing trade agreements, and in World Trade Organization rules, will preclude Brussels from offering the U.K. special benefits that it does not offer to other partners. No one in Brussels seems inclined to reopen trade talks on numerous fronts to accommodate some special post-Brexit arrangement with the British. “We will have to calibrate our approach … we cannot upset relations with other third countries,” a senior EU official said. “If we were to give the U.K. a very lopsided deal, then the other partners with whom we have been engaging, and with whom we have entered into balanced agreements, would of course come back and would question those agreements. “On top of that, there’s also a more technical point, in some of these agreements there are actually specific MFN clauses, that is clauses saying if you give more to others you will have to come back to us and give the same,” the official said. “Also for this reason, we need to maintain this balance of rights and obligations.”

Roger Sanchez Posted December 14, 2017 Posted December 14, 2017 The Art Of the Deal Quote Having agreed on the substance, the urgent negotiation turned to presentation. While the final Brexit bill would not be known for decades to come, British negotiators wanted to announce a low headline estimate for the net cost: around €40bn-€45bn, rather than the commission’s €50bn-€60bn. They also wanted the commission to say assumptions made by the UK that would minimise payments were reasonable. The most significant trick was simpler: using front-loaded payments in January-April 2019, the last three months of Britain’s membership, to lower the headline exit bill. That alone reduced the EU estimates of the bill by €4bn-€5bn, according to officials involved in the talks. “We don’t mind if they pay early,” joked one senior EU diplomat.
Marvin (Paranoid Android) Posted December 19, 2017 Posted December 19, 2017 Quote Brexit secretary David Davis will warn the European commission that it cannot “cherrypick some sectors” when negotiating a trade deal, according to a senior government official, who said the UK planned to treat goods and services as inseparable.

Potpuni, potpuni bizar.
