Ceo RTP-ov intervju:

Iranian refugee who shared viral photo didn't expect to become a symbol of the "revolution" and receive death threats

When she posted a picture of herself lighting a cigarette with a burning photo of Iran's supreme leader, 23-year-old Iranian refugee in Canada, Melika Barahimi, didn't expect it to go viral and result in death threats.

"I wanted it to be shared among my people, because I want them to know that I am still one of them, even though I was forced to emigrate after the regime sentenced me to years in prison for criticizing [Ayatollah Ali] Khamenei, but now I am worried that they might threaten my family," Melika says in an interview with Lusa conducted via the X chat, formerly Twitter.

The image, published on Thursday, went viral on social media and is being shared worldwide as an icon of the protests taking place in Iran since December 28th, but it was taken in a parking lot in a city near Toronto, where he lives, as explained in a fact-check by Lusa Verifica.

Despite receiving death threats, as she also publicly denounced on X, the young woman intends to keep the photo and video she later released "so that the world knows" what is happening and that she is in solidarity, although she regrets that some people think it was taken in Iran.

"I never claimed to be in Iran. I took the photo to show that I am against this regime, from which I fled in March 2025, because my life was in danger as I was sentenced to prison for many years, but I still have family there," says Melika, who recounts being "first arrested at age 17, during the bloody month of November 2019."

"The regime forces arrested me with a taser and a baton. I spent a night in the detention center without my family knowing where I was or what had happened to me, but my mother found out where the Islamic regime was holding me hostage and arranged for a lawyer who managed to get me released by presenting a payslip as bail," she explains. After that, she was placed under the regime's surveillance.

Later, "during the women's freedom of expression movement," she recounts participating in a YouTube talk show "as an opponent of the mandatory use of the hijab," and from then on she began "receiving suspicious calls from unknown numbers, with threats of death or serious injury."

In 2024, the young woman was detained again due to her activity on social media. "After the death of President [ultra-conservative Ebrahim] Raisi [in May 2024], I posted some comments on Instagram, as did many other Iranians, and, as I was under surveillance by the Islamic Republic, I was detained in my own home in Isfahan [central Iran] a few days later."

Melika Barahimi claims that the arrest was made without a warrant and that she was "taken in for questioning and subjected to severe humiliation and physical abuse," but was released after two days without explanation. "An extremely high bail was set for my release, and my parents were considered my legal guardians," she says.

She then decided to flee to Turkey, where she says she managed to obtain a student visa for Canada, where she currently lives. "After arriving, I learned that I had been sentenced to many years in prison and I applied for refugee status," she explains.

She currently views the wave of protests taking place in Iran with hope. "This is not a protest, it's a revolution. Imagine a thief breaking into your house, taking you and your family hostage, assaulting you, abusing you and looting your belongings. In these circumstances, you might even be forced to flee your own home and, naturally, the only thing you want is for this thief to leave so that peace returns to your home, not for him to listen to your complaints or improve his behavior a little."

This is what she hopes will happen in her country. "I am firmly committed to removing the Islamic regime from Iran and returning the country to better times. I want Iran to be governed by any system capable of providing democracy, freedom, and security to the nation and its people."
