Oil industry pleads its Hormuz case with White House

https://www.politico.com/news/2026/04/08/hormuz-oil-trump-iran-tolls-00863570

Oil executives are citing international treaties, sanction laws and high payments in opposing Iran's plan to charge ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump’s Iran peace plan is getting pushback from one key constituency: the oil industry.

Oil company executives are reaching out to the White House, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance to protest allowing Iran to charge tolls through the strategic Strait of Hormuz as a condition of peace talks, said one industry consultant granted anonymity to discuss relations with the administration.

“Hell yes,” this person said when asked if executives were contacting the White House to protest a toll on Hormuz. ”We didn’t have to do that before — and I thought we won the war. Any place you have access to the administration, you ask, what are you guys thinking?”

The response administrative officials were giving industry representatives “is not a cold shoulder,” this person added. “It’s more like, ‘Yeah, ok, we’ll take note.’”

Oil industry representatives met with senior administration staff in the State Department on Wednesday morning to raise concerns, said one person who said they attended the meeting.

Among their points: Conceding to Iran’s request would add $2.5 million to each shipment in tolls and higher insurance rates, a cost that would be passed on to consumers.

...

“The president is extremely sensitive to the legacy and judgment on the success of this war so pushing the president right now is seen as a risky proposition,” this person said. “But the White House is hearing from the industry despite the gingerness of the conversations.”

...

With a fifth of global oil supply depending on Hormuz to reach the market, leaving Iran in control of which ships can enter and exit would add significant costs — and legal liability — to companies long used to free navigation through the waterway.

Iran is already demanding tolls be paid in yuan or cryptocurrency for tankers that cross through the strait, according to media reports. Trump on Tuesday said the United States would use Iran’s 10-point plan — which calls for it to collect a toll of $2 million per ship — as a basis for a permanent ceasefire.

...

Trump on Tuesday said the U.S. was “very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East,” adding “We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate.”

...

Even with the ceasefire announced Tuesday evening, traffic through Hormuz remains all but stopped, said Matt Smith, analyst at commodities and ship-tracking firm Kpler. Iran closed the Strait again on Wednesday after Israel attacked its ally Lebanon.

...

“The transit fee of $2 million U.S. dollars per ship from Iran’s ten-point plan represents further potential for blackmail,” said Arthur Leichthammer, fellow at Berlin-based think tank Jacques Delors Center. “That would be an extremely costly concession — both politically and economically.”

Russia will see revenue from its biggest single oil tax double to $9 billion in April due to the oil and gas crisis triggered by the U.S. and Israeli attack on Iran, Reuters calculations showed on Thursday.

The Reuters calculation is some of the first concrete evidence of a windfall for Russia, the world's second-largest oil exporter, from the Iran war, which oil traders say has triggered the most serious energy crisis in recent history. (...)

According to Reuters calculations based on preliminary production data and oil prices, Russia's mineral extraction tax on oil output will increase in April to around 700 billion roubles ($9 billion) from 327 billion roubles in March. The revenue is up by some 10% from April last year.

For the whole of 2026, Russia has budgeted for 7.9 trillion roubles from the mineral extraction tax.

The average price of Russia's Urals crude, used for taxation, jumped to $77 per barrel in March, its highest since October 2023, according to economy ministry data.

That was up 73% from February's $44.59 per barrel and above the level of $59 assumed in this year's state budget. The Kremlin said on Tuesday there were a huge number of requests for Russian energy from a range of different places amid a grave global energy crisis that was shaking the foundations of the oil and gas markets.

Indiana governor suspends gas tax for 30 days over high prices from Iran war

https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/indiana-suspends-gas-tax-30-days-iran-war/

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun has suspended the state's gas tax for 30 days amid the ongoing war with Iran driving up oil prices and gas prices in the U.S.

Braun announced the state's 7% usage tax on fuel will be suspended for 30 days with a review to follow, which result in the tax suspension being extended.

"I am declaring a gas tax holiday to give Hoosier relief from pain at the pump from high gas prices," the governor said in a statement announcing the move.

Braun also said the state will be "patrolling the pumps" and monitoring gas prices to make sure the savings from the tax suspension are passe on to the consumer.

Officials said it may take a few days for the suspension to be implemented at gas stations. It does not apply to diesel fuel.

Gas price tops $5 a gallon at one station in Boston: "It's insane"

https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/boston-gas-prices-5-dollars-gallon/?intcid=CNR-02-0623

As the war in Iran enters its sixth week, drivers continue to pay more at the pump, with prices nearing $4 a gallon on average in Massachusetts up 13 cents from last week and in some cases climbing even higher.

As energy analysts warn, prices could top $5 gallon later this month if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed. At a Mobil station on East Berkeley Street in Boston's South End, prices have already crossed that $5 threshold for a gallon of regular, with diesel nearing $6.70 a gallon.

"I think I was filling up at around $50 and now I'm a little bit over $90 I guess," said Alex Gomez who stopped there for gas. "It's insane how these prices have gone."

‘Fortress China’ shows cracks as Iran war strains supply chains

Energy, chemicals and helium supply under pressure despite Beijing’s push to build up economic security

...

But six weeks into a conflict that has throttled global energy markets, sharp price increases and supply disruptions have emerged across key products that form the backbone of Chinese industry. In March China recorded its first year-on-year increase in factory gate prices since 2022.

Beijing is now hoping that the ceasefire announced this week by US President Donald Trump and Iran can hold beyond the initial two weeks, allowing oil and gas to flow through the Strait of Hormuz and global trade to resume.

...

He said that prices in China had doubled for some polyethylenes, disrupting the market for materials needed to make everything from plastic bags and bottles to clothing and toys. Prices for some carbon fibres, which rely on some feedstocks from the Middle East and are widely used across the auto and consumer goods industries, had risen 20 per cent, he added.

“It’s all the raw inputs — particularly anything that might be imported or where there’s already tight supply,” Johnson said. “It’s scarcity, it’s supply tightness, it’s a lack of visibility when things will be turned back on.”

Before the start of the Iran war, China relied on the Middle East for about one-third of its oil and 25 per cent of its gas imports. The region is also a key source of methanol, polyethylene and sulphur, among other petrochemical and agricultural commodities.

...

Risks were surfacing across high-end manufacturing operations cut off from vital raw material supplies, including industrial gases such as helium used in critical sectors including semiconductors and medical technology, Peng said.

Analysts from Trivium China, a Beijing-based consultancy, said last week that domestic Chinese spot prices for some high-grade helium had surged 110 per cent since the attacks on Iran were launched while prices for some lower-grade liquid helium were tracking 65 per cent higher since the start of the year.

...

The shortages are benefiting some, however. Several Chinese helium distributors who source from Russia told the FT that they were enjoying higher prices as buyers exposed to Middle Eastern supply rushed to stockpile.

...

Over recent days, China’s leadership has signalled that the war has spurred authorities to double down on a years-long campaign to achieve energy self-sufficiency via the electrification of the country’s transport and manufacturing base.

Lufthansa cuts 20,000 flights as fuel prices soar and travel crisis deepens

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/lufthansa-cuts-20000-flights-fuel-37051125

'In total, 20,000 short-haul flights will be removed from the schedule through October, equivalent to approximately 40,000 metric tonnes of jet fuel', the airline announced

European airline Lufthansa joined dozens of airlines in cancelling flights en masse in the coming months, with the German airliner dumping 20,000 planned journeys from its schedule in the coming months.

The move has shaped up to be one of the largest cancellations of planned flights by a global airline, as the travel crisis deepens and jet fuel prices skyrocket.

The German titan of the skies will dump swathes of flights between May and October to save fuel, revealing the mass cancellations in a statement released Tuesday (April 21).

...

The German airline also cancelled about 120 daily flights as of Monday (April 20).

...

The update from Europe's second busiest airline comes in the wake of comments made by the head of the International Energy Agency last week, who told the Associated Press last week that Europe had "maybe six weeks of jet fuel left".

As a result, multiple airlines are cancelling flights and introducing new charges as a deepening jet fuel crisis sends shockwaves through the global aviation industry.

Lufthansa is just one of more than 30 airlines around the world who say they have been forced to cancel flights or add charges as a result of Trump's war in Iran.
