UNCLOS eksplicitno definiše da se teritorijalne vode ne mogu koristiti da se zaustavi / ograniči međunarnodna trgovina. Eventualno bi mogli imati nekakvu kontrolu nad prolaskom ratnih brodova na način na koji npr. Turska ima kroz Bosfor i sl.
