A legend called Djokovic

Some time ago I saw an interview with a retired English footballer whose name I can't remember. In an especially introspective passage, he commented, between dismay and perplexity, that the children only approached him to ask him about that mythological goal in which Maradona dribbled past half a dozen players on his team, in the 1986 World Cup.

Maradona became a legend that day not because he scored an amazing goal, but because that goal was grafted onto history, erasing from the battered spirits of an entire people what had happened a few years earlier in the Malvinas. Sports feats disintegrate into oblivion or become boring statistics, when the generation that

celebrated them; and only when those feats are grafted into history do they become legendary. It happened to Maradona at the World Cup in Mexico, it happened to Jesse Owens at the Berlin Olympics, it happened to Djokovic at the Australian Open. The winner of this edition of the Australian Open may be remembered by a few die-hard tennis fans for a few years; But when those fans have died, the Australian Open will continue to drag the disgrace of having prevented, in its 2022 edition, the participation of a legend . And, in a hundred years, Djokovic will be remembered as Owens or Maradona. Surely there will be others who win more titles or break more records; but they will only leave behind a boring statistic that others more gifted will make pale in the future. Djokovic, on the other hand, no one will be able to dispute the glory of having grafted himself into history forever.

Today it may seem that his is an infamous glory that only 'represents' a minority turned into a scapegoat by a submissive and cowardly generation. Owens, too, represented only filthy blacks; Maradona also represented only a few charlatan sudacas. But the years will pass, the sporting feats of his contemporaries will pass; and the legend of today's stigmatized Djokovic will shine . And, when this submissive generation, like the media of mass cretinization and the tyrants who shepherded it, become together 'on the ground, in smoke, in dust, in shadow, in nothing', the feat of the man who, in a lukewarm time, he refused to bow his head. And God, who sees in the dark, will reward him.

Tennis fans know - and not just because the boring statistics give it away - that Djokovic is a better tennis player than any of the players who have competed with him . Those tennis players know it too , including those who these days have made miserable statements, excited at the possibility of surpassing him in the boring statistic that in fifty years no one will remember. But fifty years from now, when hunched over and decrepit (albeit with the ridiculous hair graft intact) they walk through a park, there will be a child who comes up to them and says: “Is it true that you had the honor of playing with Djokovic? ».
