Q: What were you working on the most?

„We focused on details. Mainly serve and return. I would like to appreciate the work of whole team: Gebhard Gritsch, Elena Cappellaro, Edoardo Astaldi, Ulyses Badio ane me. I am very satisfied because we didn't expect success to come that early. By winning Wimbledon Novak confirmed he is a great master of the sport.“

Q: On Wimbledon press conference Djokovič mentioned your phone call where he asked you to return. He said you accepted that night. What were you doing when he called and did you really decide that fast?

„It wasn't that night. Novak called me after his loss to Benoit Paire in Miami. He called me from Domincan Republic. He took vacation with his family after 2 years. I was at home that night. We spoke for 1 hour. He was full of doubts. Novak asked me what I thought about his tennis. He was not sure how his game should look like. He was not sure how his team should be like, having in Andre Agassi and Radek Štěpánek that time. He told me he got an idea of having me back in his team. He had a feeling he can't find the right team. He was comparing the past with the present moment. He knew how 100% should be like but he couldn't get there. We finished the call at that moment and I took 4 days to decide..“

Q: What was happening during those 4 days?

„I was thinking about it. My whole family helped me to decide. My closest told me they wanted to see Novak back on top. They helped me to accept it. I was out of top tennis for a year, even I got many offers, I rejected them because I didn't feel ready for the job yet. It would be hard to train anybody after Novak. I saw and achieved everything what was possible in tennis. Year without tennis was good for me, I recharged..“

Q: You were coming back to a player that you had great success with. For a big part it was thank to you that Djokovic is 4th best player in history already based on GS count. Was there some bitterness in you because of what happened last year? You said back then you were surprised by Novak ending the co-operation.

„No, no bitterness at all, more like relief. After decades of tennis life I finally rested from the hard tennis program. Being a coach is not easy and I needed the rest. On the other side I really thought maybe Novak needed something new and Afassi and Stepanek could help him find it.“

Q: Why it didn't work out between them?

„I spoke to Radek couple of times and I could see he really wanted to understand Novak. He and Andre really did all they could and maybe they were on the right place but in wrong time. Due to health problems Novak was not in good place. He wanted the co-operation to work out but it didn't suit him nor them. Already during that first phone call from Dominican Republic he suggested that Agassi's American mentality is different to our Slavic mentality. That time he realised what is was like with me before. He started to realize it would be hard for him to find a coach that would understand his mentality..“

Q: You mentioned hard work that you require. It is know about you that you also bring humour into training. Was it important to bring back humour and fun into Djokovic's training routine?

„Of course. You can't be dead serious. I was kindly surpised how nicely welcomed I was by Novak's opponents and coaches. During Monte Carlo tournament they all were greeting me, gugging me. It really made me happy and I appreciated it a lot. The same they shwon to Novak. They wished him to come back to top. He did it really quickly. There is saying, how long you are out of circuit, the same time you need to come back to your old level. He was out for 7 months but won Wimbledon after 13 weeks since our co-operation started.“

Q: Which coaches welcomed you back the most kindly?

„FOr example Thierry van Cleemput from David Goffin, coach of Dominic Thiem Günther Bresnik or coach of Dimitrov Dani Vallverdu. This welcoming really helped me because at the beginning I didn't know how Novak would react to me and if my return won't be difficult. I didn't know if the chemistry was still there after he went for search for something better. It was all good in the end and Novak started to improve.“

Q: Novak's father likes you a lot and you are very popular in Serbia...

„I have to mention how his family accepted me. They take me as part of family, the open up to me. I talked not only to Novak, but to his wife Jelena too. Talking to all family members was great impulse for me. They assured me that whole family suport Novak's return to top and will do everything for it. You could see that in Wimbledon. It was very important for Novak.“
