Decades later, the grandness of those sounds is what lingers. This is Radiohead’s ultimate gift as a rock band—the transmutation of sound into sensation, the way an unnerving bit of audio can play upon our nerve endings, up-end us ever so slightly. The searching language of the chorus to “Like Spinning Plates” (“This just feels like…Spinning plates”) nailed the curious, uneasy feeling that sound can give us, and the way those feelings translate into our other senses. It was the indelible sounds they made on Kid A and Amnesiac, more than any of the album’s digital age paranoia or its baleful view of the future, that comprise the band’s enduring legacy. Those sounds break free of anything you might want to attach to them.

Quote

... there’s “Spinning Away,” a song so lovely [...] Eno built it as collisions of speed, with a rolling, off-balance rhythmic base over which Eno’s vocals and Catchpole’s violin (the latter playing in a different time signature) bob like boats.

”Spinning away, like the night sky at Arles.” It’s Eno as Van Gogh painting The Starry Night, but not the hippie saint of Don McLean’s “Vincent” or a century’s worth of tormented artist biopics. It’s Van Gogh as an Eno, as a craftsman: working up sketches, drafting in pencil, moving to oils, bringing the night sky down into the frame of his canvas, making threads from loops and dots. He steps back to see the whole. “I have no idea exactly what I’ve drawn,” he sings. “Some kind of change.” The hub of the album’s circles, “Spinning Away” sings the making of itself. Along with “The River,” it’s the most beautiful vocal that Eno ever sang.

Quote

Up on a hill, as the day dissolves / With my pencil turning moments into line
High above in the violet sky / A silent silver plane - it draws a golden chain

One by one, all the stars appear / As the great winds of the planet spiral in
Spinning away, like the night sky at Arles / In the million insect storm, the constellations form

On a hill, under a raven sky / I have no idea exactly what I've drawn
Some kind of change, some kind of spinning away / With every single line moving further out in time

And now as the pale moon rides (in the stars) / Her form in my pale blue lines (in the stars)
And there, as the world rolls round (in the stars) / I draw, but the lines move round (in the stars)
There, as the great wheels blaze (in the stars) / I draw, but my drawing fades (in the stars)
And now, as the old sun dies (in the stars) / I draw, and the four winds sigh (in the stars)

Kako rece tip, piece of art, more than a song.
