malkin Posted May 21, 2011 Author Posted May 21, 2011 Rider and team protests eventually found receptive ears and, on Friday, the UCI race Giro ordered the climb – and its harrowing descent – to be removed from the day’s menu.Team directors and cautious descenders were satisfied. Fans, however, were not.On Saturday, as the day’s expected break moved away from the peloton at km 30, riders had already seen several signs expressing fans’ objection to the decision … and even a few characterizing the riders themselves as “cowards.”What the peloton didn’t yet know, as the three escapees – Bram Tankink (Rabobank), Gianluca Brambilla (Colnago-CSF) Matteo Rabottini (Farnese Vini-Neri Sottoli) – went about building up a 10:30 lead, was that the usual calculus employed to reel in a break would be disrupted by the angry fans themselves.Already shortened to 190km, the Liquigas team had moved to the front of the peloton to reel in the break with hopes of giving a stage win to its team leader, Vincenzo Nibali, and perhaps move him closer than the 3:09 he trailed Contador by.But fans, still angry over the Crostis decision, were busy organizing a group intent upon expressing its displeasure as riders were ascending a lesser climb – the Tualis – on the approach to the Zoncolan.Mindful of the protest and the impact that might have on the race, that same UCI jury quickly ordered the stage be re-re-routed away from the Tualis, cutting another 20km from the stage. What was once 35km to go, suddenly turned into 15km to go.
Krangovo telo Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 Propustio poslednjih 5 km zonkolana :(, jel ima neki snimak celog uspona?

malkin Posted May 22, 2011 Author Posted May 22, 2011 Contador’s bike switchAlberto Contador once again stopped to switch bikes ahead of a decisive summit finish. With about 50km to go, Contador slowed down, rolled behind the Saxo Bank lead car and quickly swapped frames. Saxo Bank mechanic Faustino Muñoz told VeloNews the switch was for a “slightly lighter” frame for the final climb up Zoncolan. Contador rode a 34×32 up the Zoncolan, which allowed him to keep a high cadence on the ramps as steep as 22 percent.Contador also switched bikes in a similar situation on the Mount Etna. When asked by VeloNews why Contador switched bikes, Riis said it was for “safety reasons,” saying that Contador rode wider tires with slightly less pressure to make for a smoother, more secure ride over bumpy cobblestones through the Sicilian villages and roads made slick by volcanic ash.Pošto je Kontador danas uvećao prednost nad najbližim protivnicima u svakoj od konkurencija u kojima je lider trke (generalni plasman, poeni, brda), rivali nemaju šta pametnije da kažu od ovoga:Pink jersey rivals seem to be waving the white flag following another demonstration by Contador in the Giro’s mountains.Nibali says the only hope now is that if Contador has a bad day.“Now it looks like Contador is unbeatable,” Nibali said. “The fatigue is adding up, so maybe even Alberto will get tired and have a bad day. That’s the only chance we’ll have on trying to gain time on him.”Joaquim Rodríguez (Katusha), who admitted he’s not having the Giro that he wanted, said there’s no stopping Contador.“There’s no magic pill to stop him. It will only be him who can lose the Giro now, only if he enters a crisis,” Rodríguez said. “Maybe there’s a chance to win a stage in the final week, but Contador has the GC under control.”Doduše, Nibali je imao još ponešto da doda i da napravi prve naznake polemike među liderima u trci: Vincenzo Nibali said that Alberto Contador showed a lack of respect by waiting for him and then later attacking him during the final 500 metres of the gruelling climb up to the Zoncolan.“I wanted to win the stage,” Nibali said shortly after the finish. “Everyone does his own race. I have not lost my soul. I’ve asked Contador to take a turn. I wanted to see how he was really. But he never gave me a turn. He attacked. I really think it was a lack of respect from him when he waited for me and attacked again.”“Contador had everything in his favour today,” Nibali continued in a clear indication that the cancellation of the Monte Crostis by the commissaires was a decision that pleased the race leader more than the man currently in second place overall.“That’s why people have booed Contador today,” Nibali said. “The UCI didn’t allow the Crostis to be climbed, and it was a different stage. I don’t know what would have happened with the Crostis. For sure, we didn’t make the mistake [of requesting its cancellation]. For us, the riders, safety was assured but the cars of the directeurs sportifs couldn’t assist us. But I don’t think I would have attacked Contador by riding strongly in the downhill of the Crostis. I’m not sure if it would have been worth taking that kind of risk.”Zanimljiv ugao celoj priči daje to što je vrlo lako zamisliti kako Nibali, kao najbolji spustaš među glavnim GC favoritima, pravi razliku u odnosu na Kontadora na dugom i strmom spustu poput Krostisa. Ali, po svemu sudeći, preterano je reći da su njih dvojica krivi za takvu odluku: It seems that five of the 23 teams were in favour of racing over the Crostis but 18 were against the idea. It has emerged that Liquigas-Cannondale, Lampre-ISD and Farnese Vini were all in favour. At the start of the stage in Lienz, the riders were largely in favour of cutting out the Crostis. They had accepted that the descent had been made safe but were angry that the sporting aspect of the race was lacking. They claimed a motorbike per team as mechanical support was not enough to make the racing fair for all the riders."It's the sensible thing to do. There was no guarantee of assistance and the ambulances could not to get there if there was a problem," Alberto Contador said.Marco Pinotti agreed."I think it's a wise decision. It's just a pity it was made so late," he said. "The idea of doing this road without guarantees of assistance for all riders is against what road racing is about. This is road racing, not mountain biking."
Opa, evo Kontadora!
