Cuba's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) announced this Thursday that the Cuban Government will release "in the coming days" 51 individuals "sentenced to deprivation of liberty," in a decision it linked to the "spirit of goodwill" and the "close and fluid relations between the Cuban State and the Vatican."

According to the official statement, all the beneficiaries "have served a significant portion of their sentence and have maintained good conduct in prison." The note, however, does not specify the names of the inmates, the crimes for which they were convicted, the type of penitentiary benefit they will receive, nor the exact schedule of the releases.

In its statement, MINREX presented the decision as part of an already established practice within the Cuban penal system. "This sovereign decision constitutes a habitual practice in our penal justice system and has characterized the humanitarian trajectory of the Revolution, which this time coincides with the proximity of the religious celebrations of Holy Week," the Foreign Ministry affirmed.
