FYI, velika većina osoblja u restoranu radi za manje od minimalca, a živi od napojnica. To je sasvim legalno u većini država. Ako je promet opao 75% (jer rade sa kapacitetom od 25%), onda su i napojnice pale 75%.

Odlično, taman neće morati ponovo da ih otpusti kad naidje drugi talas.

 

Ne pričam ja ovo napamet, ja znam ljude koji rade po restoranima; ovaj tvoj primer (3 od 20) je ekstreman, otprilike 40% se javlja da se vrati, ali je problem što zaradjuju malo jer su napojnice, sa 25% kapaciteta, male. Ali za nekoliko dana će biti 50% kapaciteta dozvoljeno, pa će verovatno biti bolje.

From our distance this can be somewhere between mildly amusing and bizarre. For thinking Americans living the experience it is nothing less than horrifying. A piece by David Atkins in The Washington Monthly last Saturday took direct aim at it, blaming the mainstream media’s "habit of presenting both sides of the partisan divide as being inherently worthy of respect and equal consideration, both as a way of shielding themselves from accusations of bias and as a way of maintaining their own sense of journalistic integrity".

 

The malaise comes into stark relief, Atkins notes, when face to face with "Donald Trump’s own inability to string together coherent or consistent thoughts, [which] has led to a bizarre normalisation of his statements in the traditional media, as journalists unconsciously try to fit his rambling, spontaneous utterances into a conventional framework".

 

Get it? Atkins thesis is that in the face of Trump’s pronouncements the media’s actual duty is to call them for what they are – in my words – batshit crazy.

 

Otherwise, moronavirus just keeps spreading.

 

"For a host of different reasons," Atkins writes, "core Republican voters have begun to reconstitute themselves as a conspiracy theory cult devoted to beliefs that were once relegated to the farthest fringe-fictions that cannot help but end in civil conflict and violence if they fully become canon among conservative voters nationwide."

 

He makes the point that to be a card-carrying Republican right now, "requires believing in a jaw-dropping series of claims: a cabal of evil scientists is making up climate science in exchange for grant money, that there is rampant, wide-scale voter impersonation fraud carried out by thousands of elections officials nationwide; that the ‘Deep State’ concocted a scheme to frame Trump for Russian collusion but chose not to use it before the 2016 election; that shadowy forces are driving migrant caravans and diseases across American borders in the service of destroying white Republican America; that the entire news media is engaged in a conspiracy against the Republican Party ... and so on."

 

And, of course, we really are seeing outbreaks of this kind of staggering moronavirus here, in part lead by direct consumption of the likes of Fox News, but also by our own commentators pushing similar lines to the above nonsense, and refusing to call most of Trump’s stuff for what it is: did I mention, batshit crazy?

 

And stop your squeamishness! I know you don’t like that term being applied to one side of democratic politics.

 

But listen to Atkins: "The first step to fixing it is to call it what it is, no matter how uncomfortable that might be for institutions and journalism professionals who find that sort of language loaded with unprofessional bias. The truth is what it is, even if it requires rethinking the role of a responsible press in an era of white anxiety and mass social-media-fuelled disinformation."

 

The alternative is dangerous madness and the perfect example in Australia came after Trump’s aforementioned recent pondering of the virtues of injecting bleach, when we actually had commentators in our own mainstream media defending it, saying if you looked at it just right, it made a certain amount of sense!

 

That is not journalism. It is propaganda. And together, my friends, we must help defend our own fair citizens from moronavirus. I don’t say we can eradicate it. But we can at least try and control it. As much as possible we need to keep those worst hit with it confined to the One National corral where we can keep an eye on them.

 

And in the meantime, watch out for the symptoms among our own citizens, that moronavirus is starting to take hold. The most telling sign is being perpetually angry over an unending series of perceived ills, but the blame for those ill never changes: it is them socialists/communists /leftists wot dunnit. And sometimes, yes, Bill Gates, too.

 

How to help them? Tell them the truth. This is batshit crazy.
