The Italian Automobile Club has revoked the racing licence of Russian karter Artem Severiukhin following the controversy over his alleged Nazi salute on the podium of a European championship event.

While the extraordinary meeting of the Sports Council of the Automobile Club of Italy – convened to take urgent measures following the unspeakable and unacceptable gesture of the Russian kart driver Artem Severyukhin, on the podium of the European Junior Karting Championship in Portimao (Portugal) – is still in progress, we learn that the Board itself has decided to immediately withdraw Severyukhin’s sports licence and has, at the same time, referred him to Sports Justice so that it can assess the definition of further sanctions that fall within its competence.

These measures were inevitable, since Severyukhin’s reckless act showed a lack of respect not only for the universal values that have always inspired all sports, but also for humanity, dignity and civil coexistence.

Severyukhin had obtained an Italian licence, as required by FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) regulations, which allow young drivers of all nationalities the greatest possible freedom of movement between international federations, so that they can grow professionally in those countries – like Italy – that have a great tradition in motorsport training and the training of drivers to become professionals.

Our country, in particular, has always been the most important in the world as far as karting is concerned, as demonstrated by the fact that in 2021 alone, 355 foreign drivers of various nationalities obtained an Italian licence for this discipline.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/08/world/europe/russia-may-9-victory-day-ukraine.html?action=click&module=RelatedLinks&pgtype=Article

Mr. Putin is expected to give a major speech at the grand military parade on Red Square on Monday, with some analysts and Western officials anticipating he may officially declare war or call for a mass mobilization of the Russian public. On Sunday, the Kremlin said that Mr. Putin had sent a congratulatory telegram to the heads of the Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine; he declared that Russians were “fighting shoulder to shoulder to liberate their homeland from Nazi filth” and vowed that “victory will be ours, like in 1945.”

The most dramatic case of the divisions sown by Mr. Putin’s politicization of World War II is the Immortal Regiment, the May 9 practice of marching with portraits of dead family members.

Begun in 2012 as a grass-roots movement in the Siberian city of Tomsk, the ritual became immensely popular as a way of bringing to life a fading generation. The marches drew millions across the former Soviet Union and in cities around the world with large post-Soviet diasporas.

But it was soon co-opted by the Russian government, “which saw a threat in an independent movement,” Sergei V. Lapenkov, one of the founders, said in a phone interview from Moscow. Mr. Putin personally joined the march on several occasions, seeking to channel the memory of those who died into support for his rule.

Last month, Mr. Lapenkov and his co-founders issued a statement disassociating themselves from what their movement had become, declaring that “we no longer consider it possible to associate ourselves with what is happening in the columns on the street.”

This year, Mr. Lapenkov said, the authorities removed the logo of a crane from the banners held up at the head of the parade, because the bird was seen as too solemn and not “mobilizing” enough. Instead, the organizers are encouraging marchers to affix the letter “Z” to the portraits of their relatives to show support for the war in Ukraine.

“If we go down this path, it will be very dangerous for my country, for my homeland, because it will lead to strife between people,” Mr. Lapenkov said of the idea of bringing the “Z” or any other political symbols into the march. “The point of the regiment was to unite as many people as possible.”

Mr. Lapenkov said he did not plan to join the march on Monday, but that many of those who do are acting only in the memory of their relatives, not in “support for a certain political agenda.”

Ms. Romanova, whose grandmother was a nurse, is a coordinator of an Immortal Regiment march in the Ivanovo region near Moscow, and echoed the idea that World War II memory should not be used to galvanize support for today’s war.

Chechnya’s Status within the Russian Federation

Ramzan Kadyrov’s Private State and Vladimir Putin’s Federal “Power Vertical”

Under Putin’s protection, the republic gained a leadership which is now publicly referred to by Russians as the “Chechen Khanate”, among other similar expressions. Kadyrov’s breadth of power encompasses an independent foreign policy, which is primarily orientated towards the Middle East.
Kadyrov emphatically professes that his republic is part of Russia and presents himself as “Putin’s foot soldier”. Yet he has also transformed the federal subject of Chechnya into a private state.
(...)
The head of the Chechen republic has repeatedly pointed out that except for President Putin nothing and no-one could limit or control his authority – neither parliament nor the media nor judicial mechanisms, let alone the opposition. “We have no opposition. That’s a system to undermine state sovereignty [vlast]. I don’t allow anyone to play games with the people.” No political parties exist in Chechnya other than the governing party, United Russia. Consequently, as the governing party’s candidate in regional elections, Kadyrov receives almost 100 percent of the vote. The same is true of his feudal lord Putin. Chechnya occupies first place among the so-called electoral sultanates, i.e. about 15 regions in which the results obtained by Putin and the governing party in presidential and parliamentary elections are far above the national average.

As a reward for his loyalty to Putin, vassal Kadyrov gets to treat Chechnya as his personal fiefdom. He has threatened to open fire on police units from other parts of Russia if they operate in Chechnya without his authorisation. He uses collective punishment against his adversaries and persecutes them even outside of Chechnya. He also pursues a cultural and religious policy that, according to his critics, amounts to transforming the republic into an Islamic state.

For many years, the local governor, Ramzan Kadyrov, has been ruling over Chechnya with an iron fist.

Central to his rule is the principle of collective punishment, whereby entire families pay the price for the words or alleged deeds of those who oppose Kadyrov, from armed insurgents to peaceful critics.

Law enforcement agencies under his de-facto control forcibly disappear, torture and kill — and those who dare speak up about abuses are ruthlessly punished and forced to recant on state television. But Moscow turns a blind eye.

Using these tactics, the local authorities have largely succeeded in beating residents of Chechnya into silence.

But they find it more difficult to ensure the subservience of Chechens who fled the republic for Europe, Turkey or the Middle East.

Critical voices from the Chechen diaspora — both peaceful and radical — have grown louder and more consolidated.

Antagonized by these voices, in December, Kadyrov opened a brutal offensive against them.

In Chechnya, the law enforcement and security officers under his control arbitrarily detained dozens of relatives of Kadyrov’s opponents, held them for days, and subjected them to ill-treatment.

These included family members of two opposition bloggers, Tumsu Abdurakhmanov and Khasan Khalitov. Most of the family members were eventually released but some are still forcibly disappeared.
