Edited July 17, 2014 by Geograf
Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Jeste luksuz, nažalost.

Inače dobro si me podsetio. Everything seems obvious in hindsight, but we mostly make sense of life by looking forward. The present’s elusive. Whenever you think you’re on top of it, shit happens. As part of our contracts with artists, we’d been forced to hire a festival consultant. He charged a daily rate of five hundred pounds, in return for which he showered us with plans. Since my experience extended to flicking through his files, I left production to him and G, who supervised a ragtag local workforce. An assemblage of men wearing sandals had bodged up some bars, and Portaloos had appeared around the site, along with rusting crash barriers, a phalanx of which had been bolted onto turnstiles. These welded cages were feats of DIY, surpassed only by four letters on girders, which were pile-driven into the beach to greet our visitors, as welcoming as a mineshaft in the Congo. A shiny metal fence ranged round the perimeter, daubed with stickers hawking booze and cigarettes, and a giant inflatable Pepsi bottle dwarfed everything. All in all, preparations looked in hand. But on the final afternoon, something felt different. It was almost imperceptible at first, beguiled as I was by our four enormous stages, and the sheer implausibility of their erection. By self-directing force of human will, most of the site had pulled itself together. Yet amidst this familiar chaos, there was order. And it wasn’t being supplied by any of us. When we first met our heads of security, I’d laughed. The captain was squat and his partner squint, a Balkan Laurel and Hardy in t-shirts and combats. Had their neatly pressed attire not been black, they might have passed for hospital orderlies. Whatever martial prowess they possessed, it was softened by years of greasy meat and face cream. The boss had a camp nasal twang. I marveled that we’d be paying him seventy grand. His company’s principal business was alarms, for which Belgrade’s nouveau riche formed a captive market. Their homes were rigged with endless electronics. Guard work was only a sideline, as was something called ‘criminal investigation’. This was a popular boast in the private security sector, which took off when militias demobilized from Bosnia. For a fee, contractors found your missing car. Whether they’d stolen it first, you’d have to prove. Our outfit looked too slick for street-level scams. They had more gizmos than a spy shop in Mayfair, from closed circuit cameras and bugs to pump-action shotguns. To demonstrate their mastery of savagery, they lined up heavies in jump suits in a car park, and took turns to try and knife each other’s necks. Every assailant was wrestled to the tarmac, and reduced to tapping frantically for mercy. We were told that this shouldn’t be needed on the island. And since the firm came endorsed by the state, we acquiesced. When work on the island advanced, a couple of toughs took up residence in a prefab, from which they staked out the rest of the site to ward off thieves. Their stock of gear had steadily expanded, from walkie-talkie charger racks to searchlights. But serious military hardware stayed on the mainland. Their trailer hut was corporately anodyne, with computers, wall-mounted whiteboards and a fax. It even had strip lights. As the weeks went by, reinforcements had arrived, including two women, who were clad like their counterparts, with twists. Both wore a permanent pout and wet-look hair. They were Amazons on Diet Pepsi steroids. One was introduced as the boss’s wife, the other was said to specialize in massage. Several staff employed her skills. Now their number had massively increased. Black t-shirts swarmed the island like mosquitoes. Some were helping frogmen board a dinghy. Others patrolled the Danube on their jet skis. We clearly wouldn’t be troubled by waves of fence-hoppers. The fields were being swept with muzzled dogs. Their handlers wore boiler suits modeled on the police, complete with epaulettes and deltoid insignia. One guy was wielding a nightstick. The prefab took on the character of a barracks. Most new arrivals had buzz cuts. Half the vans onsite belonged to them, decked out in blue-and-white stripes with sirens on top: we were under assault from our own private army.
