Russian director Zvyagintsev to show new film at Cannes

Russian director Andrei Zvyagintsev will represent Russia at the Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off in France on May 14, according to the festival's official twitter feed.

Leviathan was shot during spring-fall 2013 on the Kola Peninsula in the Russian Arctic. The plot is being kept a secret, though according to some sources the action takes place during the Second World War, although the war itself is not the subject of the film.

Andrei Zvyagintsev has previously directed three movies, The Return, The Banishment and Elena (Возвращение, Изгнание and Елена). The director came to global prominence after The Return won the Venice Film Festival in 2003.
