Received Pfizer fee - co-published article on the AstraZeneca vaccine

In the last five years, chief physician Pål André Holme has received over one million kroner from Pfizer and Bayer. He and several of the co-authors behind the AstraZeneca professional article deny that there are financial conflicts of interest.

It writes Klassekampen on Thursday.

On Friday last week, the medical journal New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) published a specialist article on the side effects of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The authors have received massive international attention after concluding that the blood clot of the type that killed three health workers was due to the AstraZeneca vaccine. Professor and chief physician Pål André Holme led the clinical work.

He is chief physician at the Department of Blood Diseases at Oslo University Hospital, and professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Oslo.

But what is not mentioned in the professional article is that Holme between 2015 and 2019 received 265,438 kroner from the pharmaceutical company Pfizer and 663,659 kroner from Bayer, according to the companies themselves, writes Klassekampen.

In addition, Holme's company Hemaconsult received NOK 262,450 and 57,697 kroner, respectively, from Pfizer and Bayer in 2019. In total, this will be NOK 1,249,244 for the last five years. According to the companies, the money is fees and expenses for, among other things, travel and accommodation, the newspaper writes.

Holme writes in an email to Klassekampen that he has been paid to «give lectures at international and national professional meetings / congresses with associated time-consuming preparations. Teaching / training, courses and meetings and travel reimbursement ».

VG has not succeeded in getting in touch with Holme on Thursday morning.

Holme: - Never researched vaccines

Researchers who publish articles in NEJM or other scientific journals must follow the ethical recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors.

This means that they must state any collaboration partners that are relevant to the research in question and money they have received that may give the impression of incapacity. In the so-called transparency document, which accompanies the article about the Astrazeneca vaccine, Holme states that he does not have such connections, Klassekampen writes.

According to the newspaper, he has ticked "no" on the question of whether he has received money transfers from relevant players in the last 36 months, and on the question of whether he has any connections that could create doubts about impartiality.

The international guidelines for transparency state, among other things, that the researcher "should be open about interactions with any body that can be considered relevant, in a broad sense, for the work".

When asked by Klassekampen about Holme, he sees some ethical problems with the fact that he has received large sums of money from competitors to the manufacturers of the vaccine he has researched, Holme answers:

- No, and it is important to emphasize that I have never researched vaccines. The findings are made on the basis of observations made in connection with the treatment of patients admitted to OUS Rikshospitalet, he writes in an email.

- Rough boom shot and a derailment

In a post in Klassekampen on Thursday, several of Holme's co-authors write that they have also received similar payments.

However, they flatly deny that this has affected the research:

"The purpose of such forms is to provide information about financial ties that may have influenced the researchers who published the work. Yes, several of us have received fees from pharmaceutical companies as part of training work and updating colleagues. But, no, this in no way represents financial conflicts of interest that are relevant to an article about five health workers who became seriously ill after vaccination. Three of them died. Focusing on any shortcomings in self-report forms is a gross mistake and a derailment. We ask ourselves what the Class Struggle wants to achieve. ", The co-authors write in the article in the New England Journal of Medicine.

France is imposing entry restrictions on travelers from four countries — Argentina, Chile, South Africa and Brazil — in hopes of keeping out especially contagious coronavirus variants, the government has announced.

The restrictions include mandatory 10-day quarantines with police checks to ensure people arriving in France observe the requirement. Travelers from all four countries will be restricted to French nationals and their families, EU citizens and others with a permanent home in France.
