Professor Streeck, you used to be researching a vaccine against the HI virus, but now the novel coronavirus has come between you. Aren't coronaviruses quite different from HIV?

HS: I am a specialist in virology and infection epidemiology and thanks to my training I am therefore also familiar with corona viruses. Since I have been in Bonn, my field has also expanded considerably, for example in terms of diagnostics. And I have now also specialised in other viruses in my research area. The Institute for Virology and HIV Research at the Medical Faculty of the University of Bonn was the reference laboratory for corona viruses under Christian Drosten, whom I succeeded in autumn 2019 when he moved to the Charité in Berlin. Since not all of the staff went to Berlin, a lot of expertise is available here. All my colleagues are currently working on Sars-CoV-2, in the hope of being able to contribute to research.

How many employees do you have?

HS: That's changing all the time as we're still setting up the groups. With PhD students, we have over 40 now.

What exactly is it that you do?

HS: We've tried to answer simple questions. I am probably the virologist who has seen the most patients here in Germany. We went from house to house and to each infected person in the Heinsberg district, which was particularly affected by Covid-19, and interviewed the people. We recorded the symptoms and thereby discovered new ones, took air samples, swabbed door handles, mobile phones and remote controls, we even collected toilet water samples.

Is the virus also transmitted via the stool?

HS: That is a fear that has not yet been proven. However, we have found genetic material of the virus in the toilet bowls, which does not yet mean that it is also infectious.

What new symptoms have you found?

HS: Almost all infected people we interviewed, and this applies to a good two thirds, described a loss of smell and taste lasting several days. So much so that a mother couldn't detect the smell of her baby's diaper. Others could no longer smell their shampoo, and food began to taste bland. We can't say exactly when these symptoms appear, but we think it's a little later in the infection.

How many infected have you interviewed?

HS: Certainly more than 100 infected persons, but not the very serious cases that are in hospital.

How would you describe the typical Covid 19 patient?

HS: The typical Covid 19 patient has mild symptoms. This is also the result of a Chinese study from the metropolis of Shenzhen, which found out that 91 percent of the infected patients only show mild to moderate symptoms, with a dry, irritable cough and possibly fever. In our case, the loss of smell and taste was added to this. In 30 percent of the cases our infected people also had diarrhoea, which is more frequent than previously assumed.

What else do you do?

HS: For example, we also compared the fifteen-minute rapid test of the Berlin-based Pharmact AG with the standard test, i.e. throat swabs. In the rapid test, blood is taken from the fingertip and a colour change indicates the result.

Does the rapid test react to possible antibodies in the blood?

HS: It does. Unfortunately, the sensitivity is only 33 percent, with a relatively good specificity of 93 percent. This means that if the test fails, Covid-19 is detected, but if it does not fail, the test person might still be infected. In other words, the rapid test does not detect two thirds of the patients.

btw, ja sam bar 2 puta kad sam imala ozbiljan grip izgubila culo ukusa na po mesec dana.

Jbg, meni bilo bas tuzno kad su objavili smrt njih 50 u starackim domovima u poslednja dva dna u Spaniji, sbakakvih neljudskih komentara ima, ne treba gubiti vreme na to.

Nemci su obrali zelen bostan pošto im je vreme dupliranja i dalje manje od 3 dana, što znači da će ako ovako nastave imati 1000x više slučajeva za 30 dana.

Italijanima je od 1100 do 12.000 slučajeva trebalo 11 dana, a Nemci su to spalili u nešto manje od 10.
