Ne mogu da se setim naslova filma, čija se radnja odigrava u kafeuu kome sedi lik, i ispunjava želje svakome ko pristane na zadatakkoji mu ovaj odabere. Zna li neko naziv filma?

How Leonard’s Jackie Burke Became Tarantino’s JACKIE BROWNjackie_burke_brown__span.jpgElmore Leonard’s RUM PUNCH took a few twists before landing on the big screenElmore Leonard passed away this week after delivering dozens of great novels and hundreds of memorable characters. With 45 sharp, vivid mysteries and westerns in his canon, it’s hard to choose a favorite – but I have no such difficulty naming my favorite adaptation of his work (though, yes, Out of Sight is a strong contender). Jackie Brown isn’t just my favorite Elmore Leonard film – it’s also my favorite Quentin Tarantino film. It’s a precise character study of a woman (Pam Grier) who should, by any measure, be made desperate by her circumstances, but who instead never, not even for a moment, loses her cool. Grier’s performance is the centerpiece of this crisp, moody – and surprisingly sweet – crime thriller, though of course it also boasts brilliant turns by Samuel L. Jackson as crime boss Ordell, Bridget Fonda as his stoned surfer girl Melanie, Robert de Niro as his ex-con pal Louis, Michael Keaton as Jackie’s ATF connection Ray and especially the great Robert Forster as her bail bondsman, accomplice and gentleman caller, Max Cherry. But Jackie Brown is, well, it’s the story of Jackie Brown, and twenty seconds into the film, as we watch Jackie travel down an airport conveyor belt to Bobby Womack’s “Across 110th Street,” poised and gorgeous and inscrutable, Jackie’s already a legend.And isn’t Jackie Brown a badass handle for a legend?Well, the character – a 44-year-old flight attendant busted for smuggling black-market gun money from Mexico and forced to devise an elaborate plan to keep her ass out of trouble – wasn’t always named Jackie Brown. In fact, Leonard’s Rum Punch protagonist wasn’t brown at all – she was a blonde named Jackie Burke. The differences pretty much end at the surface level, as both versions of the character are steely as a blade, fearless knockouts doing whatever it takes to survive after being dealt a whole deck’s worth of shitty hands and looking awfully fine as they do it.Tarantino renamed the character and the title of the book because Jackie Brown just sounds cooler, and he cast Pam Grier because she’s Pam damn Grier. (On a Jackie Brown DVD special feature, Grier says, “When I walked in [to Tarantino’s office to read for Jackie Brown], there were all my posters from 20 years ago, when I was a little piss and vinegar kid, and I said ‘Did you put these up because I was coming over?’ and he said ‘No, I was going to take them down because you were coming over.’…He has been a big fan, he’s had posters in his office forever. He’s been collecting them. I didn’t know I was a cult figure. He informed me.”)But the change in skin color does add a level of crisis to Jackie's situation, a middle-aged woman already forced to work for the crummiest airline in the skies and facing prison and poverty. When she sits down with Ray and Dargus (Michael Bowen) to discuss her options and Dargus sneers at her, “You’re a 44-year-old black woman,” the implication is clear. She can work with them, or her life is over. She makes sixteen thousand dollars a year and she already has a record. What choice does she have but to cooperate with these pricks who act like she should be weeping with gratitude that they haven’t thrown her in jail already?Well, Jackie makes herself a choice – one outside of what the feds tell her to do and outside of what Ordell tells her to do. In fact, after Ordell tries to threaten her and she points a gun at his dick, he never tries to tell her what to do again. It’s a scene that should be menacing, as Ordell turns off the lights and places his hands slowly around her throat, but Jackie never acts menaced. I don’t even know how to picture a menaced Pam Grier. As Leonard said in a 1998 interview, “Quentin needed a woman strong enough to stand up to Sam Jackson, and he thought of Pam Grier.”You might wonder how Leonard felt seeing his creation transformed on the big screen, and the fact is he was thrilled with it. Leonard often said that Jackie Brown was his favorite adaptation of his own work – not only that, but the best screenplay he’d ever read.In an interview with Martin Amis published as an addendum to Rum Punch, Leonard said,

This print was scanned and sent to London, where it was recently inspected by director Robin Hardy, who confirmed that it was the same cut he had put together for its American distributor in 1979. This culminated in a digital restoration of the complete U.S. theatrical version, which director Hardy recently anointed as “the final cut.”Hardy, now 83, has said of this restored version, “It fulfills my vision.”

Popularno TV lice godinama donosi utiske o „nedodirljivim“ zvezdama sa planetarnom slavom. Od Venecije preko San Sebastijana do Marakeša, prošla je crvenim tepihom Kana, zasijala na legendarnoj Kroaseti, ali i na Bulevaru sumraka prilikom dodele „Oskara“. Bila je čak član međunarodnog žirija kritike FIPRESCI u Kanu (2005) i Veneciji (2006), što joj je, kako kaže u intervjuu za naš list, do sada najveće priznanje u karijeri. Ovog leta našla se u ulozi počasne ambasadorke Srbije na Svetskom danu Štrumpfova u Parizu i Briselu, bila na Festivalu igranog filma u Puli, a upravo se vratila sa venecijanske Mostre.Kako je izgledala venecijanska Mostra, budući da je jubilarna – 70. po redu? Nažalost, stara već umorna dama, koja kao da tone poput same Venecije, jubilarni rođendan proslavila je bez snage u haotičnoj atmosferi i dalje u blizini gradilišta, gde je pre desetak godina započeta gradnja novog festivalskog zdanja, koje po svoj prilici neće u skorije vreme ni biti završeno zbog duboko ukopanih deponija azbesta, ali i finansijske krize. Iako pod udarom konkurencije u Berlinu i Kanu, a posebno u Torontu, koji je kalendarski čak i preklapa, Mostru ipak krasi istorija, tradicija, patina. Okruglo izdanje podsticaj je da se čelnici festivala, filmski stvaraoci, ali i svi oni koji je istrajno posećuju, zapitaju šta danas znači najstarija smotra pokretnih slika u svetu.Šta ste zapravo sve očekivali pre polaska? Svečarsku rođendansku atmosferu zbog velikog jubileja. Nažalost, na sedam decenija dugu tradiciju tokom festivala podsećale su nas samo crno-bele arhivske mini-vinjete koje su bile rekapitulativna uvertira u filmove iz programa ovogodišnje Mostre. Energetske ampule festival je dobio dolaskom jednog broja etabliranih filmskih stvaralaca. Počev od Bernarda Bertolučija, koji je predsedavao žirijem, preko Vernera Hercoga do Vilijema Fridkina, dobitnika nagrade za životno delo. Crveni tepih na Lidu, ispred nekadašnjeg Kazina, atraktivnim su učinili Nikolas Kejdž, Sandra Bulok, Džordž Kluni, Džejms Franko, Skarlet Johanson.Gosti festivala u „gradu na vodi“ bili su mnogi glumci i filmski reditelji koje ste već intervjuisali. Javljaju li Vam se pri novom susretu ili imaju drugačiji manir opterećen slavom? Događa se, naravno, da se sete u slučajevima kada ih intervjuišete četvrti ili pet put. Retko ko je opterećen slavom. Što je veće i značajnije rediteljsko ili glumačko ime, rasterećenije je i opuštenije. I suprotno, naravno. Iza velikih imena jednostavno stoje veliki ljudi.

Koje filmske novitete preporučujete da se odgledaju sa venecijanske Mostre? Većina dobrih filmova sa ovogodišnje Mostre naći će se na programima festivala autorskog filma i Festa. Pre svega mislim na filmove „Filomina“ Stivena Frirsa, u kojem je Džudi Denč još jednom pokazala da je u samom vrhu najpriznatijih glumica sveta, „Džo“ Dejvida Gordona Grina sa Nikolasom Kejdžom u jednoj potpuno drugačijoj ulozi u njegovoj karijeri, romantični kostimirani film francuskog reditelja Patrisa Lekonta „Obećanje“ sa sjajnim Alanom Rikmanom i Rebekom Hol, jer je optimistička potvrda da dobar klasičan film još uvek egzistira.Prisustvovali ste još jednom jubileju – šest decenija Pule. Kakav je utisak o toj smotri koja je nekada imala čaroliju svetskih? Festival igranog filma u Puli, koji je slovio za najvažniji u bivšoj Jugoslaviji, proslavio je takođe veliki jubilej uz impresivan vatromet iznad dobro očuvane Vespazijanove Arene. Na proslavi 60. rođendana filmskog festivala pod zvezdama, okupile su se sve same filmske legende sa prostora bivše Jugoslavije, vlasnici zlatnih, srebrnih i bronzanih „Arena“. Za spektakularno otvaranje glavnog festivalskog programa – vizuelni performans, laser šou uz pomoć tehnologije 3 D meping. Džinovski robot uspeo je da sruši zidine arene. Metaforično značenje moglo bi se odnositi na nove 3 D tehnologije koje ozbiljno prete da ugroze iskonske vrednosti filmske umetnosti. S druge strane, te spektakularne večeri na velikom platnu unutar zidina arene smenjivale su se pokretne slike, retrospektiva pulskih pobednika. Uz to izvodila se i najpopularnija filmska muzika iz tih naslova. Veliki broj stvaralaca filmova nastalih pod okriljem jugoslovenske kinematografije, najveći broj iz Srbije, posmatrao je odlomke iz svojih filmova, uživajući zbog fantastičnih reakcija pulske publike. Šteta što se veliki glumci i reditelji, poput Ljubiše Samardžića, Milene Dravić, Mire Banjac, Nede Arnerić, Bogdana Diklića, Slobodana Šijana, Gorana Paskaljevića, Srđana Karanovića, Rajka Grlića, Lordana Zafranovića, Veljka Bulajića, Vladice Milosavljević, Ive Grgurevića, Milana Štrljića i mnogih drugih, nisu popeli na binu. Publika bi još oduševljenije odreagovala da je videla da su svi oni tu, prisutni među njima.Koji film biste izdvojili sa tog festivala? To je film Vinka Brešana „Svećenikova djeca“, rađen u maniru italijanskog neorealizma. Jedan od razloga zašto su njegove komedije popularne, bojene sarkazmom i ironijom, leži i u dobrom osećaju za društveni tajming. Slučajno ili namerno, film se pojavio u trenutku kada je eskalirao, njegovoj tematici blizak, kulturni rat između hrvatske Vlade i Katoličke crkve. Sudeći po ranijim iskustvima, zbog kojih je Brešan postao sinonim za kršenje tabua, ali i renesansu hrvatske kinematografije, taj film ima sjajan pulicitet. A tome doprinose i kontroverze i kritike svih onih kojima se Brešanovo delo neće svideti.

Nedavno ste bili u ulozi počasne ambasadorke Srbije među predstavnicima iz celog sveta, skoro 100 ambasadora iz 28 zemalja, na Svetskom danu Štrumpfova u Parizu i Briselu. Kakvo iskustvo nosite sa te manifestacije? U Briselu i Parizu proslavljen je Svetski dan Štrumpfova uoči premijere drugog igrano-animiranog filma posvećenog ljupkim stvorenjima koja su više od pet decenija neiscrpna inspiracija svim generacijama. Na toj proslavi, na kojoj su bili predstavnici iz celog sveta, skoro 100 počasnih ambasadora iz 28 zemalja, bila sam u ulozi počasne ambasadorke Srbije. U organizaciji „Sony picturesa“ priređena je spektakularna ceremonija u francuskoj prestonici, gde se i odvija radnja novog filma. Posetili smo poznata mesta na kojima je film sniman, od Ajfelovog tornja, preko Trokadera do Noterdama. Uz to više od stotinu obožavalaca za divnu družinu Štrumpfova izvodilo je koreografiju iz dve hit numere iz filma „I’m Too Smurfy“, koju je specijalno za film obradila grupa „Right Said Fred“ i „Ooh La La“, koju je otpevala Britni Spirs.Da li su pripreme za odlaske na festivale opterećene krizom i kako zapravo izgleda realizacija avio-karata, smeštaja, ugovaranje intervjua i svega što je potrebno da na male ekrane donesete ono što gledamo? Sve to što ste naveli može se pomnožiti sa tri. Veoma je teško, ne samo meni, već i kolegama iz mnogo bogatijih zemalja.

Sa koliko planetarno slavnih ste se fotografisali i razmišljate li da nešto posebno napravite sa tim slikama? Isključivo se fotografišem sa onima sa kojima uradim intervju. Razmišljam čak i o tome da jednog dana možda napravim i izložbu svih tih fotografija, a ima ih preko stotinu, kao vid neke lične profesionalne rekapitulacije.Jednom prilikom ste rekli da više nikada ne biste intervjuisali francusku glumicu Ketrin Danev, jer je bila vrlo neprijatna. Ona je u Parizu agitovala bombardovanje Srbije. Da li se u međuvremenu još neko zvučno ime našlo na Vašoj „listi“ nepoželjnih? Iako sam njegov film baš u ovom intervjuu izdvojila kao ostvarenje koje obavezno treba pogledati, ne mogu a da ne spomenem drugi primer neprijatnosti koji se dogodio baš u Veneciji. Britanski sineasta Stiven Frirs mi je nakon što me pitao odakle sam, prstima pokazao krst zbog zemlje iz koje dolazim, kao da sam „antihrist“. Razmišljala sam da li da prekinem intervju i napustim prostoriju ili da ostanem profesionalac do kraja. Izabrala sam ovo drugo zbog filma koji zaslužuje pažnju.Nije retkost da novinari širom sveta objave knjige sa pričama o nastanku intervjua sa poznatima. Da li ste spremni da je i Vi napišete i koliko intrigantnosti bi ona nosila? U toj knjizi svakako ne bi bilo pikanterija iz privatnog života, već bi to bili ozbiljni razgovori o filmovima, karijerama, ulogama... Eventualno začinjeno nekom anegdotom koja se dogodila tokom samog intervjua. Bojim se da u Srbiji, kulturološki unakaženoj zbog sadržaja koje dugi niz godina plasiraju pojedini mediji, a sada je, čini mi se, sav taj neukus eskalirao, tako nešto ne bi bilo preterano interesantno. Često se pitam ima li uopšte smisla baviti se kulturom u Srbiji.
