He’ll say, ‘There’s a great shot coming up, watch what this director did here.’ It’s like being in the best film school.”Ms. Schoonmaker, nominated today for her fourth editing Oscar, for “Hugo” – she has already won for “The Departed,” “The Aviator” and “Raging Bull” – hardly needs to go to film school. But she said that even for her, working with Mr. Scorsese, with whom she has collaborated for most of her career, still serves as an education.“It’s so much a part of his being, to resurrect these masters who came before, from whom he learned so much,” she said from her editing room in New York, where she was working on another project for Mr. Scorsese. “We do documentaries on the history of cinema in between our feature films,” she said. They have already completed volumes on America and Italy, and are working on one on British films. This chapter “will have the films of my late husband, Michael Powell,” Ms. Schoonmaker said. “Have you seen ‘The Red Shoes’? He directed that. And Marty resurrected him from oblivion just as he did for Georges Meliès,” the pioneering early filmmaker at the center of “Hugo.”(Ms. Schoonmaker is no cinema history slouch herself: she noted that one of the first people to be nominated for an editing Oscar was a woman, Anne Bauchens, Cecil B. DeMille’s longtime editor. She was nominated several times and won for the 1940 picture “North West Mounted Police.”)The attention for “Hugo,” which led the Oscar pack today with 11 nominations, was extra-special, Ms. Schoonmaker said, because the film did present challenges to even Mr. Scorsese’s very experienced crew. “We were a little afraid when we started, because none of us knew the 3D process and it was our first digital film,” she said. In the end, though, it did not affect her process; she scarcely visited the set. “My job is to look at it with a cold eye, without too much knowledge of what goes on the set,” she said. “That’s what Marty wants. But we look at dailies every night and I talk to him all during it. And then he comes in and starts cutting with me – he loves editing. He cut ‘Mean Streets’ himself completely.”That so many of Mr. Scorsese’s regular collaborators, from the costume designer Sandy Powell to the composer Howard Shore to the art director Dante Ferretti, were also nominated was going to make the Oscars a fun night. “We’ll have a helluva celebration even if we don’t win,” Ms. Schoonmaker said.That “Hugo” is a love letter to classic cinema made by some of the most devoted cinephiles in the business made the kudos extra-sweet. “It’s very special because of the great masters that went before us,” she said. “That it’s a celebration of that, is such a joyful thing.”“The fact that people go away from it with this great feeling,” she added, laughing, “is very different for what our films usually do.”

... Zanimljiv - iako ne i izuzetan - je i film “Zarobljenica” filipinskog majstora nasilnog naturalizma Brillante Mendoze. U “Zarobljenici” Mendoza rekonstruira istinitu priču iz 2001. kad su islamistički gerilci na otoku Palawanu oteli grupu turista i zaposlenika resorta i držali ih kao taoce sedam mjeseci.Reakcije talaca na situaciju daleko su od očekivanih (neke su lokalne žene čak prešle na islam i poudavale se za teroriste!), a Mendoza zanimljivo pokazuje razliku u ponašanju Zapadnjaka - koji očajavaju i smatraju da su žrtva nepravde i izdaje - te lokalaca koji usud prihvaćaju s fatalizmom, takoreći kao dio prirodnog reda stvari.

... Као занимљив, али не и изузетан, показао се и филм „Заробљеница” филипинског мајстора насилног натурализма Бриљантеа Мендозе. Реконструишући истинити догађај из 2001. године, када су исламски екстремистички герилци отели туристе и локално хотелско особље на острву Палаван и држали их као таоце седам месеци, Мендоза је занимљиво показао разлику у понашању Западњака (очајне жртве) и отетих Филипинаца (фаталистичко прихватање ситуације) и главну, веома захтевну улогу, поверио неуништивој француској глумици Изабел Ипер, која је Мендозино вођење кроз филипинске прашуме прихватила са њој својственим дигнитетом и емотивном хладноћом.
