SAN FRANCISCO -- A tiger escaped from its enclosure in the San Francisco Zoo on Christmas Day, mauled one man to death and left two others seriously injured. The tiger was shot and killed by police after it charged officers.A police spokesperson said the zoo was evacuated after the incident, which occurred late in the afternoon near the Terrace Cafe at the east end of the zoo. The zoo was being searched for other possible victims Tuesday evening, even though there were no missing person reports. Police helicopters circled the area with searchlights as ambulances stood by.Police set up a perimeter around the zoo and searched on foot for other possible victims.Initially, officials believed that up to four tigers in the same enclosure may have escaped, but only one actually left its pen, said San Francisco Fire Department Lt. Mindy Talmadge.Officials said that the same tiger, a Siberian named Tatiana, had mauled a zookeeper in front of horrified visitors about a year ago. Visitors then told zoo officials that the female tiger grabbed the keeper's hands in its claws and was pulling her. A second keeper freed the employee from the tiger's grip. The almost-daily public feedings were suspended."Nothing like this has ever happened before," Lora LaMarca, the director of marketing and public relations for the zoo, said at the time. The tiger was kept in a grotto with a moat 20 feet deep and 15 to 18 feet across, surrounded by a 20-foot wall. Officials could not immediately say how the animal escaped, nor do they know precisely how long it was out of its enclosure. At a little after 5 p.m. Tuesday, when there were as few as 20 visitors at the zoo, police received a report of a tiger on the loose, said Police Sgt. Steve Mannina. Four officers responded and soon encountered a zoo employee in a golf cart who said there was a wounded patron in front of the tiger grotto. That man died of his injuries, Mannina said.Police then started to search for the tiger, finding it at the zoo's Terrace Cafe, about 300 yards from the tiger enclosure, where they encountered a visitor with blood on his face. They approached with their emergency lights on."The tiger sees them, then goes back on the victim and continues to maul the victim," Mannina said."Then the tiger charges the police officers and four fired," killing the animal. The victims, who were in their 20s, were not zoo employees. No other details about their identities were immediately available.Mayor Gavin Newsom was "deeply saddened" about the incident, said his spokesman, Nathan Ballard. "A thorough investigation is being undertaken to uncover all the facts and to understand how this tragedy could have occurred," Ballard said. The zoo entrance was blocked Tuesday evening near San Francisco's Great Highway and adjacent to Ocean Beach and the densely populated Sunset District. The two injured men were being treated at San Francisco General Hospital, where the nursing supervisor said they were in serious but stable condition. Officials said the zoo will be closed today out of respect for the victims. It is typically open every day of the year.

scepa Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 poludeli crnac:Tyler, Texas ? A man killed his girlfriend, then filleted and cooked parts of her body before calling police to tell them what he was doing, authorities said Sunday.Christopher Lee McCuin, 25, called 911 on Saturday and told an emergency dispatcher he had killed Jana Shearer, 21, and was boiling her body parts at his mother's home, said Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith. When authorities arrived at the home, they found Shearer's mutilated body, one ear boiling in a pot of water on the stove and a fork sticking out of some human flesh sitting on a plate on the kitchen table.Web Extras: Multimedia & Related Contentvideo Man Killed Girlfriend; Cooked Her body, A man who told a 911 operator he killed his girlfriend and cooked parts of her body faces a capital murder charge, authorities said. Deputies responding to the 911 call found a gruesome scene, a human ear boiling in a pot on a stovetop. (AP Video/Jan. 7)Authorities said it was unclear whether McCuin consumed any part of Shearer's body."We cannot prove that he did," Smith told The Associated Press. "He was either going to, had been or led us to think that he was doing it."Authorities believe Shearer, 21, was abducted from her home Friday night and killed. Her death and mutilation was apparently the beginning of a crime spree that also included McCuin allegedly stabbing the boyfriend of his estranged wife and breaking into a business. The stabbing victim is in critical condition at an area hospital, officials said.McCuin, of Tyler, about 110 miles east of Dallas, was charged with capital murder. He was being held in the Smith County Jail on a $2 million bond Sunday and did not have an attorney, officials said. He was scheduled to be arraigned Monday, Smith said. Before he called 911, McCuin told his mother and her boyfriend to look in their garage, authorities said. There the couple saw the remains of Shearer. McCuin's mother and her boyfriend fled the home and flagged down a police officer. McCuin dialed authorities after they left.A man who answered the door Sunday night where the body was found declined to comment.Shearer appeared to have died from blunt trauma to her head, Smith said. She may have been kidnapped Friday night, when her mother witnessed her get into McCuin's truck."There was no struggle but she could see the girl left with no shoes, no purse and no cell phone," Smith said.McCuin then drove to his estranged wife's home, where he stabbed William Veasley, 42, Smith said. McCuin was still in that home when deputies arrived, but escaped in his car after a short chase, Smith said."We thought it was a disturbance or an assault," Smith said.McCuin wasn't seen again until Saturday morning, when he arrived at his mother's home and called her into the garage so she could "come see what he had done," Smith said. When sheriff deputies arrived, McCuin barricaded himself in the home for a short time before coming out. After he emerged, officers entered and found Shearer's body, Sgt. Gary Middleton said.Detectives were trying to determine where the slaying happened. They think McCuin drove to his mother's home with the dead woman in the back seat of his extended-cab pickup, Smith said.Freddy Castillo, who lives two houses down, said he frequently heard McCuin and his girlfriend argue in the house and the yard."They would get pretty loud," Castillo said. "They'd yell back and forth and then he would just get in his car and leave."

Lefevre received a suspended jail term.He had pleaded guilty to three counts of committing fraud by dishonestly making false representations in order to make a gain for himself, and one count of criminal deception. It's safe to assert that he wasn't trying to gain the trainers for himselfRhodri James, defendingRecorder Kenneth Hamer sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment on each of the four counts to run concurrently, suspended for two years. The court heard that he had approached one 16-year-old boy in Hastings, on 15 June 2007, and had what appeared to be a police radio, a baton and handcuffs.Lefevre, a tour manager for a coaching company, was arrested after the boy's mother became suspicious. When officers raided his home, they seized 35 pairs of trainers in different sizes, two boxes of police cordon tape, handcuffs, belt attachments, a police dog handler badge and a Sussex Police badge.'No explanation'In addition, police also recovered a notebook making reference to surrendering trainers.Rhodri James, defending, said Lefevre did not suffer from any diagnosed mental illness but clearly he was in need of some help."It's safe to assert that he wasn't trying to gain the trainers for himself and really there is no explanation as to why he did it," he said.Lefevre was also given an 18-month supervision order, 120 hours unpaid work, told his police equipment would be destroyed, and ordered to pay ?150 costs.
