Message added by Valk,

Topik je tribute dragom forumašu Warpu. RIP.

Welcome!

Tesla and Nyarlathotep - The Crawling Chaos and Scientific Progress

Spoiler

It is impossible to say exactly what HP Lovecraft 's opinion was about Nikola Tesla and his fantastic experiments. However, it is possible to assume that Tesla's experiments somehow touched Lovecraft and perhaps even inspired some of his creations.

Lovecraft was a compulsive reader and always kept himself informed about scientific discoveries around the world. Many of his stories have an almost academic scientific erudition, a source of long research and discussions with his eclectic correspondents.

The scientific world amazed Lovecraft. For some time, he himself had ambitions to study astronomy, but had to give up this dream due to his lack of familiarity with mathematics and his precarious financial situation. He was an amateur in several fields of science, immersing himself in technical manuals and compendiums on physics, chemistry and biology. He translated this self-taught knowledge into his stories and managed to imprint an extremely authentic character on them.

It is possible to infer that Lovecraft admired the great names in science of his time, which would have included Tesla, one of the most heard names of his time.

In fact, there is a theory defended by biographer Will Moore that Tesla inspired Lovecraft to create one of his most famous characters, Nyarlathotep .

Pay attention to this excerpt:

"And into the civilized lands came Nyarlathotep, proud, slender, and sinister, always buying strange instruments of glass and metal, and combining them into still stranger instruments. He talked much about the science of electricity and psychology, and gave exhibitions of power that left his spectators speechless, even as they created for him a fame of enormous magnitude"...

Moore relates this excerpt from the story Nyarlathotep to Tesla himself, and the similarities are incredible.

Tesla was known for giving public demonstrations that resembled illusion shows that were extremely popular at the time. Many thought he was first and foremost a magician. The scientist believed that the best way to demonstrate his discoveries was to do so in an extravagant and sensational way. To this end, he would often allow witnesses to attend his scientific demonstrations without revealing what they were going to see.

In one of his best-known demonstrations, he invited his friend Samuel Clemens (better known as Mark Twain ) to hold a light bulb that suddenly turned on, giving the writer a terrible fright. It is said that he played tricks on his guests by activating machines that produced enormous electrical discharges and sitting next to them. The great experiment of Colorado Springs(reported in the previous article) is the ultimate example of his presentations in front of a large audience. Tesla liked to shock and fascinate the public.

His glass and metal machines were strange, they emitted lightning and sparks, vibrated and created sound and shock waves that reverberated. People were amazed, some found his tricks frightening and dangerous. Just like the Crawling Chaos , Tesla liked to cause a sensation and be the center of attention. His presentations attracted people's curiosity and guaranteed him fame and notoriety.

The description of Nyarlathotep also evokes Tesla's physical appearance. A slender man with impeccable posture, who seduced with his speech and sold his ideas. He was also an eccentric. It is no exaggeration to consider him, rightly or wrongly, the stereotype of the "mad scientist". To begin with, Tesla behaved in an obsessive manner; many claim that he suffered from OCD, and it is quite possible that this was true.

Even stranger, he attributed his fantastic discoveries to visions and hallucinations he received when he was in a kind of trance. In this condition, he had dreams in which he clearly saw how a certain machine or device should be built and how it would work. He did not hide his eccentricities, and even fueled discussions with testimonies and fantastic stories. He is said to have said on one occasion that his devices could "break the planet if he so desired."

In some stories, Nyarlathotep appears as a kind of merchant interested in presenting new things. Many times, his gifts turn out to be terrible and awaken the worst in humanity. Some authors claim that Nyarlathotep was the one who encouraged the study of atomic fission, which paradoxically led to the discovery of nuclear energy and atomic terror. A typical prank that the Crawling Chaos would love to play: handing man the key to his progress and his destruction.

Nyarlathotep disguised as a salesman of novelties and a merchant of wonderful devices and machines.

Tesla's claim that his creations could change the world is very similar to Nyarlathotep's role as a merchant. His inventions are both incredible and terrifying. He envisions an " Earthquake Machine " and an incredible " Death Ray ," inventions that could cause unprecedented destruction.

I also wonder if Lovecraft saw in Tesla's curious behavior elements that inspired him to write another of his classic works: The Shadow Out of Time . In the story, the Great Race

, a species of beings native to Earth's remote past, cast their minds back in time to inhabit people's bodies and use them as a simulacrum to study the era and customs. During the period in which they were inhabited by such creatures, people behaved strangely, even though they demonstrated incredible gifts for science and remarkable knowledge.

Could Tesla be the inspiration behind the Yithian explorers ? Lovecraft never said so, but given the reports on Tesla's behavior, who knows if something was not filtered by him and assimilated into the story.

Nyarlathotep first appeared in 1920 and Shadows was written in 1935, at which time Tesla was still in the spotlight.
