September 25, 20168 yr Curtis Hanson on Nicholas Ray’s In a Lonely Place: “I think I was about 14 when I first saw it on television, and it really affected me deeply. What was so scary was the raw emotion of Bogart’s character, but at the same time I identified with him; I was drawn to him. There was also something about the adult world that was pictured in the film. It feels like a world which is threatening in its darkness and ugliness, and yet there is great tenderness, too… “He is an honest man in a community of hypocrisy and nepotism. He is also an artist in a business that rewards shallowness and commercialism.“ “It is about a character who is uncontrolled in his honesty and directness, which is not a good thing. He’s trying to express himself, to be an honorable creative artist, while all of those around him are encouraging him not to. And every now and then, he explodes. I showed this picture to Russell [Crowe] and Guy [Pearce] because I wanted them to see the reality of that period and to see that emotion…”
