Manchester United honoured convicted paedophile with invite to women’s game

Just one normal day as a Manchester United fan, that’s all we ask for.

Not today as a report claims Manchester United honoured Geoff Konopka with an invitation to one of our Women’s Super League (WSL) matches last season, unaware that he was a convicted paedophile who abused young girls.

According to The Times, Konopka was welcomed back to United as a “special guest” to celebrate his past achievements in charge of the Women’s team from 1983 to 2001.

To make all of this even worse, United didn’t just invite Konopka to a game. They commemorated his career and featured him in a display at the Old Trafford museum.

This is a man who spent a decade on the sex offenders register after spending four years in prison for 19 offenses of indecent assault and gross indecency against young girls. As a result, we really need to know who was responsible for inviting Konopka to an event attended by thousands of children.

The club said in a statement: “Manchester United has recently received information around these convictions, and as a matter of urgency has been in contact with the relevant legal and football authorities to substantiate the facts.

 

“The club has taken appropriate action after receiving this information and will have no further connection with the individual."
