"These players make havoc in the Rangers defense." Edited March 18, 2022 by Dimitrije

John Coltrane Posted March 20, 2022 Posted March 20, 2022 (edited) The intimidating tunnel, a two-minute walk to pitch and the roaring Red Star ultras Jordan Campbell Mar 17, 2022 11 “When people talk about the tunnel being famous they say, ‘It’s not like they’re gladiators’. But these players are like gladiators when they walk through here onto the pitch,” says Alexandria, Red Star Belgrade’s tour guide. It may sound twee in an age in which football’s heritage has largely been eroded in favour of sanitised commercialism but, as you walk through the neverending tunnel at the Rajko Mitic Stadium, it is clear that not only is this bowl-shaped arena a relic of a bygone age, it is every bit as powerful as the anecdotes claim. Red Star’s ground has undergone subtle modernisation in recent years to comply with UEFA requirements but the one unique feature that remains largely unchanged is this original tunnel, built in 1963, leading the players to the pitch. What makes it so unique? For starters, the changing rooms are outside the stadium and the walk from them to the turf is so long that, although, whistle-to-whistle, half-time is the conventional 15 minutes long, the amount of time it takes to get to and from the building housing them means it is actually curtailed to around 11 minutes. The players’ changing rooms are located in a building outside the stadium. After Red Star’s players enter the arena tonight (Thursday) for the second leg of a Europa League last-16 tie, James Tavernier will then lead Rangers’ players out of the annexed building at the back of the stadium. From there, it is a 240-metre walk to the pitch — by far the longest in European football. It will take over two minutes for the Rangers team to make it out of the tunnel. They will then have to cross a running track and walk half the length of the pitch to line up for the pre-match anthem. Alexandria talks about the “psychological advantage” this unique tunnel offers Red Star’s players. As you walk down it, it soon becomes clear why footage from the pre-match walk at the “eternal derby” against city rivals Partizan still regularly pops up on social media. Here’s what the tunnel looks like now for Rangers to walk through… The downward slope of the tunnel mirrors the incline of the concrete stand above, making it feel like you’re entering an amphitheatre. The tube-shaped structure is covered by bright red paint and psychedelic red and white swirls and motifs. Its ceiling is so low that players over 6ft tall have to lean forward at times to avoid hitting their heads. Players are used to the darkness of a tunnel and the warmth of the bright lights hitting them as the sky opens up in front of them. But this is not like turning one corner from the dressing room and quickly being out on the grass, this is more akin to the pressure a boxer experiences during a ring-walk before a title fight. Two minutes is a long time to be alone with your thoughts, and that becomes apparent walking the route in silence with no one around. It will be a completely different matter tonight with more than 50,000 Serbians desperate for their team to become only the second side in Europa League history to overturn a three-goal deficit following Rangers’ first-leg victory at Ibrox last week. Just 15cm of concrete separates the roof of the tunnel from the ultras above it, meaning its walls tremble and the sound vibrates down. While Red Star will walk straight down and out of the main tunnel, which is built into the stand, Rangers will instead take a left turn 20 yards beforehand and follow a different route. There, they will then go down two sets of stairs and walk along the path where fans will be banging on the other side of a red bolted door. Two divisions of Belgrade’s special police force line either side of the tunnel to act as a buffer between the players and the home fans on the other side, but Rangers will have a little extra distance to walk so they avoid exiting underneath the home fans, whose collective name “Delije” is written across the seats behind that goal. On the walls behind them are paintings of fans who have lost their lives, and of their Serbian heroes and players. Rangers will be glad to have some room between them and the crowd when they climb the final set of steps and reach the advertising boards. At the end of their long walk, this is where the Rangers players will emerge into the arena Rangers will enter the pitch through the tunnel closest to the pitch, while the Red Star players will emerge from underneath the ultras’ section The stadium suddenly opens up and the travelling Rangers support will be centre of the players’ eyelines when they look up, as they have a pen set aside for them in the far corner, guarded by fencing and nets on all sides. Although the stadium is as traditional as it gets, there are plans underway to install a roof, work on which will begin next season. When the stadium was first built, there were around 20,000 standing places, equivalent to 8,000 seats, but at its peak, there were more than 110,000. That is where the name Marakana comes from, as it was a tribute to Brazil’s national stadium, which has the same name and was once the biggest in the world. But renovations have been carried out in recent years, spearheaded by Hamilton Academical general manager Scott Struthers, who also works as a UEFA stadium inspector and match delegate. He has conducted 75 inspections in all but between 2016 and 2018 Red Star became his focus after attending a Europa League first-round qualifier against Maltese side Floriana. “It was abundantly clear that they had let the ground go,” he says. “Having won the Champions League against Marseille in 1991 they converted the ground from its 110,000 (capacity) terracing. It then had to be all-seated but after that they didn’t do much at all. “They hadn’t qualified for the group stages for 10 consecutive seasons so they had fallen off UEFA’s radar. UEFA had been sent various correspondence about upgrading certain parts but they simply hadn’t, and by not qualifying no one had followed it up. “The ground wasn’t compliant, be it from toilets, CCTV, control rooms, turnstiles, the state of the terracing, the maps outside the ground. It just wasn’t meeting modern group-stage requirements. “The minute a seat was broken, it remained broken. When a seat was thrown, it remained missing. Because the ultras were so used to running that stand behind the goals themselves, I convinced the clubs to make a YouTube video explaining to the ultras why they had new seats. “It looks superb now and is in a really good condition but it was a matter of them accepting why they had to be upgraded.” Red Star manager Dejan Stankovic is certainly not giving up on turning this tie around and he is hoping the home advantage — and the test of character in the tunnel — can spur his team on to do the unthinkable. “Nothing is lost,” he said. “One early goal for Red Star can change everything. We will see how Rangers will behave under pressure, like we were in Glasgow. “This stadium makes Red Star players twice as good as usual. That adrenaline, that roar that comes from the stands — it will be twice as strong as at Ibrox. “It won’t scare Rangers, they know they play in front of a full stadium. But let them count on this — they will play a twice-as-strong rival.” Edited March 20, 2022 by John Coltrane 4
