Strava.

A new report from the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) found that a record 50 gigawatts (GW) of new solar capacity was added in 2024.

This is also the largest single year of new capacity added to the grid by any energy technology in over two decades. Solar and storage accounted for 84 percent of all new electric generating capacity added to the grid last year, according to the U.S. Solar Market Insight 2024 Year in Review released by SEIA and Wood Mackenzie.

Further, domestic solar module production tripled last year. At full capacity, U.S. factories can now produce enough to meet nearly all demand for solar panels in the United States.

“Solar and storage can be built faster and more affordably than any other technology, ensuring the United States has the power needed to compete in the global economy and meet rising electricity demand,” SEIA president and CEO Abigail Ross Hopper said. “America’s solar and storage industry set historic deployment and manufacturing records in 2024, creating jobs and driving economic growth. It’s critical that lawmakers continue to support an ‘all of the above’ energy strategy that fosters the growth of American energy sources like solar and storage.”

Texas led all states in new solar capacity additions last year with 11.6 GW of new installations. In total, 21 states set new annual installation records, while 13 states added over 1 GW of new solar capacity in 2024.

Wind and solar energy generated more electricity in the U.S. than coal for the first time last year, according to analysis from clean-energy think tank Ember. The two renewable energy sources accounted for 17% of the country’s power mix while coal fell to a low of 15%, it said.

Solar was the fastest-growing energy source, according to Ember’s analysis of data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, increasing 27% from the year before, while wind rose 7%
