Iran: novi front

Featured Replies

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps wrote on social media, "Now the war has begun for us," following US President Donald Trump's confirmation of US airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites early Sunday morning.

Additionally, a commentator on Iranian state television stated that every American civilian or military personnel in the region became a legitimate target.

The IRGC initially denied the strikes occurred, stating that "no evidence has been released so far to confirm Trump’s claim," adding "it is possible that his statement is merely a media show."

Iranian national television later confirmed that three nuclear facilities have been evacuated, and an Iranian official cited by Tasnim News Agency confirmed that part of the Fordow nuclear site was attacked by 'enemy airstrikes.'

"Iran had been expecting attacks on Fordow for several nights. Fordow was evacuated long ago and did not sustain irreversible damage," an adviser said to the speaker of the Iranian parliament.

"Two things are certain: Knowledge cannot be bombed, and the gambler will definitely lose this time."

How far did the Fordow hit push back Iran's nuclear program? - analysis

Some Israeli officials told the Post they believe Fordow was destroyed, while others said caution should be the rule until confirmation is given.

The most important question confronting Israel, the US, and the world after the US bombed the all-important Iranian Fordow nuclear site with its mega bunker buster bombs and added some "icing on the cake" attacks to Natanz and Isfahan is: how much has Iran's nuclear program been pushed back?

Prior to the US attack, estimates were that an attack on Fordow, following Israel having already mostly destroyed Natanz and Isfahan, would push off the nuclear program by a minimum of six months, with many coming in at two years, and some thinking the delay of the Islamic Republic's nuclear threat could even be longer.

Israeli and US intelligence estimates to The Jerusalem Post had been that only the US's 30,000 pound (MOAB) bomb, specifically its Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) variant, could completely destroy Fordow, given that it is located under a mountain, and that Israeli attacks would only damage or cause cave ins to delay the use of the nuclear site for some shorter period of time.

In fact, this is why Israel waited to attack Fordow for the past 9 days - to see if it could get America to do the job more thoroughly.

Initial estimates, therefore, are that Fordow is not only partially damaged or caved in, but destroyed.

But these are only initial estimates based on the science of how deep Fordow is and the explosive power of the MOAB/MOP.

The truth is no one knows because no one has ever bombed a site this deep before, and even if someone had, when you are talking about such a deep site, each site will have its own unique characteristics in terms of the kind of rock and the kind of human defenses (a version of "major bomb blast doors") which could slow down or deplete the explosive power of the bomb.

Fordow's status

This is one instance where, eventually, there is one right answer: it was damaged or destroyed - but we may not know for some time.

US and Israeli satellites and aircraft may not be able to see all the details underneath a mountain or mountain cave-in, and there were no public statements indicating American or any other non-Iranian forces on the ground at Fordow to check up close.

Such a mission could itself be extra risky because it may not be possible to find out the answer without spending many hours or even days digging through the rubble.

There is a question about whether the Iranians will want to lie to say things are better than expected, or whether they will eventually come clean, knowing that eventually the world will find out anyway.

Some Israeli officials told the Post they believe Fordow was destroyed, while others said caution should be the rule until confirmation is given.

But let's say Fordow was destroyed and not just damaged. Could the reprieve for the nuclear threat be longer than two years?

Iran and critics of hitting its nuclear program have repeated ad nauseum that no one can kill nuclear knowledge acquired by the regime in recent years, when it succeeded in enriching uranium up to 60%.

But Israel has killed many, many nuclear scientists this time and destroyed dozens of nuclear locations besides the big three.

Could the delay, therefore, be longer? It is too early to say.

But these are the fateful questions which Israelis, America, and the world need answers to to fully understand how much time Israeli and US operations in Iran have now bought from the Ayatollah's nuclear threat.

Iran promises to resist US attacks ‘with all its might’

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has issued a statement slamming the US’s latest strikes on its nuclear facilities as a “gross and unprecedented violation” of international law, and saying it has the right to resist such “aggression”.

“The world must not forget that it was the United States that, in the midst of a diplomatic process, betrayed diplomacy” by supporting Israel’s “aggressive action”, and is now waging “a dangerous war against Iran”, the ministry said in a statement carried by the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

The ministry said it has become clear that the US “adheres to no rules or ethics, and in order to advance the aims of a genocidal and occupying regime, spares no lawlessness or crime”.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran considers it its right to stand with all its might against US military aggression and the crimes committed by this rogue regime, and to defend the security and national interests of Iran,” it added.

US attack ‘more or less guarantees’ Iran will be nuclear-armed within decade

Trita Parsi, the executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, says that there was “absolutely no evidence” that Iran posed a threat.

“Neither was it existential, nor imminent,” he told Al Jazeera.

“We have to keep in mind the reality of the situation, which is that two nuclear-equipped countries attacked a non-nuclear weapons state without having gotten attacked first. Israel was not attacked by Iran – it started that war; the United States was not attacked by Iran – it started this confrontation at this point.”

Parsi said the attacks on Iran “will send shockwaves” throughout the world because it will be very difficult for countries that risk ending up in the crosshairs of the US and Israel to feel that they are safe without having a nuclear deterrent.

“So I fear that we will see proliferation, but I also think that this has more or less guaranteed that Iran will be a nuclear weapons state in five to 10 years from now.”

Iranians fear Netanyahu wants to ‘dismember’ Iran along ethnic lines

We’ve been speaking to Mehran Kamrava, a professor of government at Georgetown University in Qatar.

He told Al Jazeera that the people of Iran fear that Israel’s goals stretch far beyond its stated goal of destroying the country’s nuclear and missile programmes.

“Many in Iran believe that Israel’s end game, really, is to turn Iran into Libya, into Iraq, what it was after the US invasion in 2003, and/or Afghanistan. And so the dismemberment of Iran is what Netanyahu has in mind, at least in as far as Tehran is concerned,” he said.

“And so, for the Iranians, capitulation is not an option. Because they would see this as not just regime change, but as a dismemberment of the country. Already, there’s talk in Jerusalem of providing security guarantees to Iran’s different ethnic communities, the Baluch, the Arabs, the Kurds, and to do to Iran the de-facto division that has occurred in places like Libya, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.”

‘The beginning of a long escalation’

David Phillips, a senior adviser at the US State Department during the Clinton, Bush and Obama administrations, says he believes Iran will retaliate against US military bases and interests following Trump’s order to attack Iranian nuclear sites.

“Trump had announced a two-week window for diplomacy to work. It seems like the US has jumped the gun and decided to pull the trigger and attack anyhow, risking escalation in the region and counterstrikes against US troops – 40,000 of them nearby,” he told Al Jazeera.

Phillips, currently an academic visitor at Oxford University, said that “the importance of Persian pride” should not be underestimated.

“Now that Iran has been attacked – not only by Israel but by the United States – Iran will look for reprisals, and that largely is going to focus on the US troops in the region, the Red Sea [and] other American assets.”

He also warned this could be the beginning of a long period of escalation.

“I don’t think it’s one and done,” Phillips said.

Manan Raeisi, a member of Iran's parliament representing Qom, the province where the Fordow facility is located, affirmed that “preliminary inspections at the strike locations confirm there is no nuclear radiation.” He further asserted that claims made by US officials, particularly US President Donald Trump, were misleading.

“Based on verified information, I can say that contrary to the American president’s false claims, the Fordow facility did not suffer significant damage. Most of the impact was surface-level and easily repairable,” Raeisi said.

Raeisi described the US president’s statements as exaggerated and noted that the lack of casualties at the Fordow nuclear site is evidence of the superficial nature of the strikes.

“Trump’s fabricated claim about Fordow’s destruction only highlights how ineffective the strikes truly were, so superficial that not a single martyr has been reported at the site,” he added.

He also warned that the attack represents a direct escalation.

“This act of American aggression marks clear and direct involvement in the war,” he warned, stressing that “Iran alone will determine the timing and nature of its response to this reckless provocation.”

I jedno i drugo. Samo Iranci znaju kolika je šteta.

Tačno, ali dosta ih je protiv. Pa kako onda odrediti šta je volja većine? A vojska evropskih zemalja ne učestvuje u ovim zločinima.
