Anduril Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 Second, we are demonstrating the power of American strength and diplomacy. We're upholding the principle that bigger nations can't bully the small -- by opposing Russian aggression, supporting Ukraine's democracy, and reassuring our NATO allies. Last year, as we were doing the hard work of imposing sanctions along with our allies, some suggested that Mr. Putin's aggression was a masterful display of strategy and strength. Well, today, it is America that stands strong and united with our allies, while Russia is isolated, with its economy in tatters. That's how America leads -- not with bluster, but with persistent, steady resolve.

Blic + american dream Edited January 22, 2015 by Skyhighatrist

akibono Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 US Special Forces Are Operating in More Countries Than You Can Imagine What do you know about the special forces carrying out a secret war in more than half the nations on the planet? In the dead of night, they swept in aboard V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft. Landing in a remote region of one of the most volatile countries on the planet, they raided a village and soon found themselves in a life-or-death firefight. It was the second time in two weeks that elite US Navy SEALs had attempted to rescue American photojournalist Luke Somers. And it was the second time they failed. On December 6, 2014, approximately 36 of America’s top commandos, heavily armed, operating with intelligence from satellites, drones and high-tech eavesdropping, outfitted with night vision goggles and backed up by elite Yemeni troops, went toe-to-toe with about six militants from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. When it was over, Somers was dead, along with Pierre Korkie, a South African teacher due to be set free the next day. Eight civilians were also killed by the commandos, according to local reports. Most of the militants escaped. That blood-soaked episode was, depending on your vantage point, an ignominious end to a year that saw US Special Operations forces deployed at near record levels, or an inauspicious beginning to a new year already on track to reach similar heights, if not exceed them. During the fiscal year that ended on September 30, 2014, US Special Operations forces (SOF) deployed to 133 countries—roughly 70 percent of the nations on the planet—according to Lieutenant Colonel Robert Bockholt, a public affairs officer with US Special Operations Command (SOCOM). This capped a three-year span in which the country’s most elite forces were active in more than 150 different countries around the world, conducting missions ranging from kill/capture night raids to training exercises. And this year could be a record-breaker. Only a day before the failed raid that ended Luke Somers life—just 66 days into fiscal 2015—America’s most elite troops had already set foot in 105 nations, approximately 80% of 2014’s total. Despite its massive scale and scope, this secret global war across much of the planet is unknown to most Americans. Unlike the December debacle in Yemen, the vast majority of special ops missions remain completely in the shadows, hidden from external oversight or press scrutiny. In fact, aside from modest amounts of information disclosed through highly-selective coverage by military media, official White House leaks, SEALs with something to sell and a few cherry-picked journalists reporting on cherry-picked opportunities, much of what America’s special operators do is never subjected to meaningful examination, which only increases the chances of unforeseen blowback and catastrophic consequences. ..... http://www.thenation.com/article/195409/us-special-forces-are-operating-more-countries-you-can-imagine

dillinger Posted January 24, 2015 Posted January 24, 2015 (edited) Sveopšta žal za najodanijim saveznikom u borbi za demokratski svet WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama expressed condolences and offered sympathy Thursday to the people of Saudi Arabia upon thedeath of King Abdullah, an important ally and a major force in the Muslim world. The White House also announced that Vice President Joe Biden would lead a U.S. delegation to Saudi Arabia in the coming days to pay respects to the king’s family. Obama, who visited with the ailing king in his desert compound last March, praised Abdullah for taking “bold steps” in advancing the Arab Peace Initiative. In a statement, Obama credited the 90-year-old king for being dedicated to the education of his people and for greater outreach to the international community. “As a leader, he was always candid and had the courage of his convictions,” Obama said. “One of those convictions was his steadfast and passionate belief in the importance of the U.S.-Saudi relationship as a force for stability and security in the Middle East and beyond.” Biden said he appreciated Abdullah’s “frankness, his sense of history, his pride in his efforts to move his country forward, and his steadfast belief in the U.S.-Saudi relationship.” Though allies, Abdullah and U.S. leaders had their differences. Abdullah pressed the Obama administration to be tougher on Iran and to show greater backing for the mainly Sunni rebels fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad. Obama said he “valued King Abdullah’s perspective and appreciated our genuine and warm friendship.” Abdullah’s death was announced Thursday by Saudi state TV. His successor was announced as 79-year-old half-brother, Prince Salman, according to a Royal Court statement carried on the Saudi Press Agency. Secretary of State John Kerry, who was in London for a meeting of the coalition fighting Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria, called Abdullah “a brave partner in fighting violent extremism who proved just as important as a proponent of peace.” Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel called the king “a powerful voice for tolerance, moderation and peace — in the Islamic world and across the globe.” :0.6: “As a leader, he was always candid and had the courage of his convictions,” President Barack Obama said. Former President George H.W. Bush praised Saudi Arabia’s alliance with the U.S. after Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990, an invasion that led to the first Gulf War. Calling Abdullah a “dear friend and partner,” the first President Bush said he would “never forget the way Saudi Arabia and the United States stood together against a common foe – marking a moment of unparalleled cooperation between two great nations.” Bush’s son, former President George W. Bush, called the king “an important and able ally and a force for modernization in his country.” Republican leaders on Capitol Hill had high praise for the longtime Saudi monarch as well. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain called Abdullah “an important voice for reform in Saudi Arabia. He pushed for the modernization of the education system, curbed the authority of the religious police and extended women the right to vote and run in municipal elections.” And Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker said, “King Abdullah was a strong ally of the United States and clear-eyed about many of the challenges the Saudi kingdom faces at home and abroad.” http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/obama-offers-condolences-death-saudi-king-abdullah/ Edited January 24, 2015 by dillinger
