Dugo nisam nosio svoju modovanu Scuba Dude Amphibiu.

Siva je onako, bland but goes with everything.

Aliexpress Brands Guide (MONSTER POST)

This post seeks to be a general introduction to most of the relevant brands you can encounter on Aliexpress. The descriptions therefore are high level overviews of the general characteristics of the brand. The spotlight models are, in my opinion, either the best watch or the best-selling watch of that brand.

It is truly difficult to rank these brands or put them into tiers as it is so subjective for most of these brands. So I just put them into two broad categories: Top tier and Good tier. There will be still be a gap between the best and worst brand within each tier, but short of ranking them, this will have to do. I also added a few side tiers to capture the rest of the relevant brands. If you feel a brand is out of place or missing, please comment!

Top Tier

The following brands' watches are generally considered the highest quality on Aliexpress in no particular order:

1. IXDAO (£150-£200)

IXDAO releases only 1-2 models per year so they have relatively small catalogue. But every single piece is really well done with an attention to detail and a penchant for keeping the dimensions and proportions of the original that it is homaging. They also homage some very interesting pieces making their line up quite unique. Oh, and they also have some of the best bracelets around.

Spotlight model: JDX-06S

2. San Martin (£100-£300)

San Martin began by making great homages of the most in-demand watches. Every component of their watches is of great quality resulting in a very cohesive-feeling watch. They have recently pivoted towards making original designs with great fanfare. It comes at the cost of increased pricing which for many is still great value. One aspect that they have continued to improve upon are their bracelet and clasp and they always lead the pack in this regard. Their watches are generally 39mm to 40mm.

Spotlight model(s): SN0144 and all the variants

3. Cronos (£110-£160)

Cronos does everything as well as or better than everyone on this tier but at a lower price point then everyone else besides Watchdives. Basically above average quality at below average prices. They typically use high beat movements like pt5000, sw200, or Miyota 9 series in their latest models.

Spotlight model(s): L6037/L6040

4. Watchdives (£70-£120)

Watchdives has been on a meteoric rise in the last year or so. They used to be in the tier below, but their latest models show that they should be in the top tier going forward. Amazingly, they have kept prices more or less the same at around £120 or below. They actively seek community input, adjust quickly, and execute near flawlessly. Of all the brands in this tier, they are the busiest releasing the most models. They trend towards smaller cases sizes and frequently use quartz movements.

Spotlight model(s): WD1863 and WD003 deep teal

5. Farasute (£130-£400)

Farasute, like IXDAO, homages more interesting designs at a very high level. Their designs also tend to lean towards dressy vintage. Their packaging is also one of the best. Although not every piece in their line up is £200+, some of their best pieces like the one below are £350+.

Spotlight model: F4130

6. Baltany (£100-£250)

Baltany mainly focuses on marrying vintage designs with modern materials and movements. They have great crystals and great AR. They also offer hardened steel on some of their models which is still rare amongst these brands. A good number of their models have options for different movements at different price points.

Spotlight model: S4055

7. Milifortic (£100-£150)

Milifortic is Baltany's sister brand focusing mostly on field watches and chronographs. There is a lot of overlap between Milifortic and Baltany so just choose whichever name you prefer more or whichever one is cheaper.

Spotlight model: M096

8. Sugess (£80-£300)

Sugess and Seestern are actually sister companies. Sugess seems to focus more on the dress watches, moonphases, and chronographs.

Spotlight model: Top Time homage

9. Seestern (£80-£160)

Seestern focuses more on dive watches and a bit of pilot watches. Lume is one of the best in this tier.

Spotlight model(s): S434/S435

10. Proxima (£100-£150)

Proxima mainly does dive watches. They like to homage Christopher Ward pieces. They even have a "light catcher" case that feels like a pebble. They also send out photos of the actual watch you'll be getting before sending it out.

Spotlight model: PX1721

11. Rimalti/Rmalti (£130)

Rimalti makes the closest GS homages. They have one or two GS cases that they just reuse for most of their models. Their focus seems to be more on developing new dials and handsets for the modding market.

Spotlight model: RM88109

12. Octopus Kraken (£120-£170)

Octopus Kraken was really active up to a year ago but dropped off a cliff recently in terms of releasing new models. They still sell the previous models which are all really high quality.

Spotlight model: OK0016

13. Huasuo (£300-£400)

Huasuo is one of the few brands that do gemstone dials and lacquer dials. They are predictably more expensive than most on this list at around £400 on average. But the higher price seems to be slightly offset by a relatively smaller premium of upgrading to a sw200 from the standard pt5000.

Spotlight model: HS002

14. Lobinni (£100-£150)

Lobinni do really dressy pieces that start at 40mm wide. It's great if you are looking for a watch to wear to the office and you have big wrists. Their watches are also really thin and some uses Hangzhou micro rotor movements which are featured in some microbrands like Baltic.

Spotlight model: 1888

15. Agelocer (£150-£800)

What this brand offers that others generally don't are skeleton dials and tourbillions.

Spotlight model: 9004A1

16. Jianghun (£250-£300)

A sister brand to San Martin that is solely dedicated to producing original designs at an even higher workmanship and price. The designs tend to be different than what most are used to. They also use more premium movements such as sw200 or Miyota 9 series.

Spotlight model: JH0301

17. Lucky Harvey (£900)

They have a chiming watch for under £1k! They also have other watches that are priced out of consideration when there are other great watches for a lot less. But did I say they have a chiming watch?

Spotlight model: Self-Sounding Watch

18. Beijing/Shanghai/Seagull (£20-£500)

Chinese watch brands that Chinese people recognize but still accessible to the Western market.

Spotlight model: Seagull 1984 Antarctic Expedition and Red Star Chronograph

19. Ironwatch/Hestur (£120-£170)

Ironwatch was active until 3 years ago and then hibernated until it returned last year with a bubble back. Then it rebranded itself as Hestur with some interesting releases.

Spotlight model: HT8008

20. Hruoland (£120-£160)

Mainly vintage designs in pilot, dive, and GADA watches.

Spotlight model: F016

21. Aesop (£250-£350)

They are mainly known for their affordable tourbillions. They are generally on the bigger side like 42mm.

Spotlight model: Tourbillion 7021

22. SH (£130-£180)

SH uses primarily pt5000 movement. They also use forged carbon cases in some models.

Spotlight model: Carbon PRX homage

23. Aquatico (£250-£400)

Aquatico uses some premium materials like carbon and bronze. They make nice watches for sure, but do they do it that much better to command such a premium? A few think so, and they pop up on this sub from time to time. They also have one or the nicest packaging.

Spotlight model: AQ-1012WND

Good tier

The following brands all make good quality watches that if they just refined one or two or three areas it would make them great. Those compromises, however, are often forgiven because of their lower price points.

1. Militado (£40-£60)

Militado watches are amazingly well done for their price point. Watches at this price point usually have one or two components that don't match the rest of the watch. Militado watches somehow avoid this and have a very cohesive feeling. They use almost exclusively quartz movements and offers K1 crystal options first and sapphire crystal options second. They also tend to produce smaller watches at 38mm and below.

Spotlight model: ML08 and ML05

2. Merkur/Seizenn/Pierre Paulin/Pierre Philippe/Guilberlin (£70-£150)

This group has many original designs using ST movements. Sapphire crystal is not the standard with this brand. They do a lot of small seconds and jump hour watches with vintage styling.

Spotlight model: Fanzhi cross-line

3. Thorn (£40-£150)

Thorn is an interesting brand putting out designs that no other brands will touch. They also make some of the smallest watch cases at 34mm and some of the largest at 47mm. Some would argue that they belong in the top tier but their insistence on including "exploration road" on some of their most popular models holds them back.

Spotlight model: T004

4. Heimdallr (£80-£130)

Heimdallr focuses almost exclusively on dive watches. Almost everything they make somebody else in this tier makes as well.

Spotlight model: HMSK01

5. Steeldive (£40-£300)

Steeldive mainly does, you've guessed it, dive watches. They have incredible lume and serious looks. They also homage some really interesting dive watch designs. They offer bronze cases on many of their models. They also mainly uses NH35 movement.

Spotlight model: SD1970

6. Steelflier (£30-£100)

A sister brand to Steeldive that mainly does pilot watches and recently started doing Sinn homages. It's a newer brand with a limited catalogue.

Spotlight model: SF752

7. Addiesdive (£20-£80)

Addiesdive is probably one of the two gateway brands to Chinese watches. They have a vast catalogue of all kinds of styles of watches. They mainly use quartz movement and sapphire is not standard. For many, the quality AD provides is already good enough to not warrant a need to spend more.

Spotlight model: AD2066

8. Pagani Design (£20-£80)

This is the other gateway brand to Chinese watches for many people. They are the most prolific in producing new models. Their many designs are almost always good-looking but the lume and bracelet and clasp can be lacking.

Spotlight model: PD1701

9. Rollstimi (£10-£60)

A sister brand to Pagani Design offering even cheaper prices. There is a lot of overlap between the two so just choose which name you prefer more or whichever one is cheaper.

Spotlight model: RT7931

10. Berny (£30-£80)

Berny has an eclectic collection of designs. They also often feature brighter colors in their models. They are also one of the few brands that feature women's watches.

Spotlight model: 2945M

11. Boderry (£70-£200)

Boderry is an interesting brand with skeleton watches and many other styles that feature titanium or bronze cases.

Spotlight model: Voyager A11B

12. Tactical Frog (£90-£140)

Tactical Frog focuses mainly on dive watches. They offer several models with solar quartz. They also offer several models in titanium.

Spotlight model: FXD V4

13. Welly Merck (£40-£180)

Welly Merck has been on a developmental tear in the last year or so. Some would argue that they are the most improved brand recently. Their older models still has their name whereas the newer ones only have the logo due to popular demand.

Spotlight model: WM226

14. Specht & Sohne (£50-£100)

They are focused on integrated bracelet designs as well as more square designs. Their integrated bracelet designs are interesting but have a smaller margin for error.

Spotlight model: SP0028

15. Rdunae (£40-£180)

They make really cool Tuna homages as well as pilot watches. They tend to just use their logo which is quite nice.

Spotlight model: RA03

16. Phylida (£80-£130)

They homage all the usual designs with slightly better quality than the brands in the tier below.

Spotlight model: SE-11

17. Seakoss

Seakoss does a nicer Red Star than most. They also have a Panerai-like GMT.

Spotlight model: 2557

Assemblers tier

The brands below have much more in common than they have in differences. It is likely they just assemble watches from widely available parts and put their brand on it. (The previous tiers are not exempt from this, but they do enough that the refinements set them apart from other brands.)

1. Cadisen (£30-£80)

Cadisen has been around for a while and has a homage of most designs that are usually homaged. They are generally one of the cheapest brands that still feature sapphire and a NH35 movement. They also feature models with the Miyota 9015 movement for less than anybody else on Aliexpress.

Spotlight model: C8175

2. Parnis (£50-£100)

Parnis is one of the OG and have a super vast catalogue of designs. Basically anything the top brands can do, Parnis can do, but not as good. If Parnis doesn't have another brand's design, it is likely that the other brand did not just assemble that particular watch from widely available parts. Parnis also do women's watches.

Spotlight model: PA2112

3. Corgeut (£40-80)

Corgeut homages all the usual designs. They look great on the wrist and in photos. But they lack some of the refinements that the top tier brands offer.

Spotlight model: 2057

4. Carnival (£50-£100)

Carnival does mainly big dress watches. They also have some cool complications and combinations like power reserve day/date for the cheapest possible on Aliexpress.

Spotlight model: 8762G

5. Tandorio (£30-£70)

Tandorio offers so many designs that chances are that they have the design you're looking for. They are also customizable and accommodating to special requests like a different handset. They also offer sterile dials on many of their models. They somehow are able to offer sapphire and NH35 cheaper than almost anywhere else.

Spotlight model: 40mm MOP dial IWC homage

6. Mysterious Code (£40-£90)

They make cheaper versions of some of the most popular models on Aliexpress.

Spotlight model: 091601

7. Reef Tiger (£80-£180)

Another brand that has been around. They have some really loud and blingy pieces.

Spotlight model: RGA8238

8. Escapement Time (£40-£150)

Their focus is mainly on pilot watches and simple dress watches. Their dress watches are on the smaller side.

Spotlight model: King Seiko homage

Toy tier

The brands in this tier are so cheap that any quality is a pleasant surprise. They will not have sapphire or 316L stainless steel even if they advertise it as so.

1. Sanda (£1-£9)

Spotlight model: 9031 (Tank homage)

2. Benyar £

Spotlight model: BY-5176M (Milgauss homage)

3. Rollstimi (£10-£60)

Spotlight model: RT-7931 (Daytona homage)

4. Mini Focus (£10-£15)

Spotlight model: MF 0601 (Citizen Tsuno homage)

5. Skmei (£1-£10)

Spotlight model: 1628 (G-Shock 5600 homage)

Emerging Tier

The brands in this tier have one (or two!) awesome watches. Hopefully they can keep up the momentum and release more awesome watches (and maybe even improve). If so, they can easily be included in the Good tier or the Top tier.

1. Wishdoit (£35-£80)

They used to focus exclusively on Richard Mille homages. But in this last year they released a Zodiac Super Sea Wolf homage to great acclaim. They have since followed up with a GMT that looks great in every color way.

Spotlight model(s): WSD-9987, WSD-9007

2. Phorcydes (£90)

They were active 3 years ago but then disappeared until recently. They came back with a bang though with one of the most impressive watches with a ton of superlatives. The best lume. The blackest dial. Incredible AR. Lumed buckle. Their next model will even have lumed blocks!

Spotlight model: PH-1, PH-2

3. Sea Knight (£65-£120)

Sea Knight does 2 watches: Serica 5303 homage and a Seiko Monster homage. It does both well and cheaper than the alternatives from the Top tier and the Good tier.

Spotlight model: SK01, SK02

4. Chameri (£35)

Chameri does two models to great acclaim. They have different dials but the same case, same indices, and same handset. VH31 quartz movement and sapphire crystal for less than Watchdives and Militado is impressive.

Spotlight model: GS03, GS04

5. Bettimer (£150)

Bettimer is a newcomer with a well-received GP Laureato homage homage. They have followed up with a few releases that all use essentially the same case.

Spotlight model: B8001
